On the pacific coastal side the Whangarei Heads you will find the magnificent 5km long Ocean Beach. The Beach is surf patrolled through out the summer months and is a well known beach for boogie boarding and surfing. The water is crystal clear during the summer months and there a fantastic views from the sand dunes at either end of the beach. There are some great rock pool exploring to be had at low tide at either end of the beach. This has to be one of the most spectacular beaches in NZ. It will take you approx 35 minutes to drive out to this beach from Whangarei and aprox 15 mins from Parua Bay. Highly recommended!!
First time I’ve swum in the sea in April. Beautifully warm, great surf for my boogie board, good facilities nearby.

This was a beautiful walk. Easy going track. Unfortunately not accessible for wheelchairs. Steps up to the lookout and walking tracks. Three different walking tracks to choose from. Beautiful views of the whole of Whangarei.

There is a car park with toilets at the entrance to the walk at Urquharts Bay. We find it best to go anticlockwise around the walk as the beach is about two thirds the way around. Then after spending time there there is an easy walk back to the car. My favourite view is looking down at Frenchman’s island and and at the same time a view along the coast to Bream Head. There is a seat there if you need a rest. One of our favourite walks in the Whangarei area.
