Mount Stanley

Reviewed By _Mags_NL - Luanda, Angola

In December we did a 7 day hike to the summit of Margherita Peak, the third highest peak in Africa at 5100m. Our trek was supposed to last 8 days but since my bag arrived a day late we had to do day 1-3 in 2 days. It caused a bit of altitude headache but we were fine after that. I recommend doing the hike in 8 days. Rwenzori Trekking Services (RTS) was great. We got in touch before the holiday paid online and all our questions were answered promptly. They sent us a packing list and what we didn’t have we borrowed from them. (Sleeping bags). They also provide you with rubber wellies for the boggy sections, crampons, a harness and an ice axe for the glacier on summit day. We had no previous experience with ice climbing but this was not a problem. They taught us the day before summit day and we got to practice putting on the crampons and attaching the jumar on the rope. The hiking is tough! Way harder than Kilimanjaro. The trail is either steep, rocky and rooty or flat and boggy. But the flora and fauna and the views are amazing so it’s well worth it. Our guide Edison was excellent and, as well as being very patient and knowledgeable about climbing skills and the natural environment of the Rwenzoris, he also told us a lot about his language and culture. We had a group of porters who carried our luggage and food. Everyday when we arrived at camp (simple huts with mattresses) our bags were already there and a stove was on in the dining hut to warm ourselves by and to dry our clothes. We had a choice of breakfast options; eggs, toast, porridge and pancakes. Lunch was usually made as a packed lunch, sometimes a sandwich with an apple and juice, other times potato salad. The dinners were huge! Usually rice, pasta or potatoes with a mixture of vegetables in a sauce. The non-vegetarians really enjoyed the spaghetti Bolognese. At the end of our trek we were asked to give feedback (both positive and negative) we also completed a feedback form. It seems that RTS has been listening to all the feedback they have received over the years because we could hardly think of any improvements. It is always hard to know what to tip the porters and the guide but we discussed this with other hikers on the trail and agreed on the following; $5 per day per porter and $10 per day for our guide. We handed the total (in Shilling) to the head porter as he knew which porters had been on our trip for 3 days and which ones had been there for seven. I would definitely recommend hiking with Rwenzori Trekking Services (RTS) as they manage and maintain their own trails very well and the camps are clean (much cleaner than the two camps we passed that are managed by RMS.

Mount Gahinga

This volcano, together with Mount Muhavura and Mount Sabinyo, are the three northernmost peaks of the Virunga chain. The entire area is home to rare mountain gorillas.

Volcano walk it said in the itinerary - so we left our lodge to get started, briefing began and we learned we were going on a HIKE !!! well, the furthest myself and my husband walk is to the pub and back...... anyhow, we enlisted porters ( who were absolutely a godsend at $15 each) to carry our rucksacks and set off up the volcano, so far so good, minimal elevation and then a couple of hours in, passing much beautiful scenery and wildlife including chameleons and gigantic worms the legs started feeling the climb, luckily our guide was fabulous as he let us go at our own pace and eventually, 4 hours later we got to the top to see the crater lake - the pain was so worth it, the clouds, rainforest and views of the other volcano peaks was spectacular.....and then the long walk back down - totally recommend

I summitted Margherita Peak on 1 January 2020 through the services of Rwenzori Trekking Services. Great company, great guides. I had a fantastic time. But let me warn you, this mountain is not for first time hikers or the unfit. If you are, you will want to quit.
