The Lagoon Kitchen

An interesting activity to experience on a visit to Sri Lanka is cooking a typical local meal at Dil's Sri Lankan Kitchen, where Dilmani, Sri Lankan mom and hostess, will share her knowledge on the art of Sri Lankan home-cooking. You will be familiarized with the components of a typical Sri Lankan meal, how to balance various flavours, colours, and textures of local ingredients, and how to bring out their best features, using different cooking methods. You will also learn about blending various spices and herbs to create the unique taste of Sri Lankan cuisine. Feel the salty breezes mixed with fishy odours. Experience the raw intensity of the action. Perhaps you might like to pick up your favourite sea food, to be cooked and enjoyed later in the day at Dil’s Sri Lankan kitchen.

I love cooking and enjoy seeing the way different cultures cook. I had one experience in Sri Lanka where I was only to watch someone else cook but NOT here! Nuwan and his wife do an amazing job of guiding you and then you doing the whole process from husking coconuts on a spike, grating your own coconut, making 1st and 2nd coconut milk... and this is all in the first 15 minutes! We cooked an amazing array of curries/dishes - pumpkin curry, fried eggplant dish, chicken curry, dried fish curry, Dahl and banana flower curry... over 10 dishes! You get a hands on experience in a beautiful family home - a true insight into Sri Lankan cooking! I would definitely recommend and I would definitely do it again if we come back to Sri Lanka!

During your visit to Sri Lanka, you will quickly realise how amazing Sri Lankan food is. This cooking class is thus an awesome way to learn how to make and eat delicious Sri Lankan cuisinewven when you’re back at home. The location is a bit of a trek from the city centre (45 minutes Uber ride each way) but is well worth the journey. Also, as it is home based, it’s a good opportunity to visit and be warmly welcomed into a Srilankan home. The husband and wife team are very friendly and welcoming and well organised. You will be introduced to commonly used spices and ingredients and taught some cooking tips and tricks before u start prepping to make the dishes. All in all we learnt to make (and then enjoy eating) at least 10 dishes! The eggplant moju is finger licking good! The recipes will even be emailed to you at the end of the cooking class so you can try and apply your newly acquired knowledge/skills at home. Would highly recommend.
