Western Norway (Norwegian: Vestlandet, Vest-Norge, Vest-Noreg) is the region along the Atlantic coast of southern Norway. It consists of the counties Rogaland, Hordaland, Sogn og Fjordane, and Møre og Romsdal. The region has a population of approximately 1.3 million people. The largest city is Bergen and the second-largest is Stavanger. Historically the regions of Agder, Vest-Telemark, Hallingdal, Valdres and northern parts of Gudbrandsdal have been included in Western Norway.

Visited Olden and Briksdal in June and it is definitely worth the visit and it exceeded all my exceptions. As you take the tranquil 45 minute walk to the glacier you are surrounded by breathtaking snow capped mountains, lush green spots of grass and mountain flowers and flowing waterfalls which you can stand beside and soak up its spray of water. However, if walking isn't your thing or you are unable to, you can take a troll car up the winding paths to the glacier although if you are able to make the trek it is 100% worth it.

We took the funicular up to the top of Mt Floyen and then walked down on the Stoltzekleiven. It was not a difficult walk and signage ensured that everyone arrived at their destination. Views were beautiful so ensure that you take a camera with you.We walked down the route in the evening so had the benefit of seeing the sunset. The paths were paved and the stairs were very safe. We ran into the herd of goats that live on the Mt Floyen during our descent and did not encounter any mosquitoes which surprised us. It was the highlight of our last night in Bergen! This is a "must do" activity when visiting Bergen!

Would you climb 4444 steps up the longest wooden staircase in the world? Florli 4444 is a climb of 4444 steps (more than that in fact!) up the side of an old trolley railway beside the water pipes of an old hydro-electric power station. The hike up takes about 2 hours and is hard work. This is a hike for adults and older children with a decent level of fitness. You are not supposed to come down the steps so the hike down is by another route, taking about three hours. The descent is steep, uneven and slippery at the top. The most fantastic hike with beautiful views throughout. A hidden gem compared to the other more famous Stavanger region hikes.

We arrived to Kristiansund in the early evening and stopped here on the way to our hotel - 5 minutes away. You park the car in the street and go up a path - a few hundred meters to the top of the hill. The small Varden tower looks like a small lighthouse. You go up 2 short flight of steps and get a great view of all Kristiansund (built on 3 islands) and the ocean. It's free and well worth the visit if in the city.
