What to do and see in Western Cape, South Africa: The Best Coffeehouses

February 5, 2022 Timmy Ribble

South Africa’s most popular tourist destination offers the urban thrills of Cape Town, its adjacent wine country and an aura of the rich political history of South Africa. The Overberg's perfect whale-watching perches provide excitement of a different nature. The Garden Route's lakes and forests and the Klein Karoo's ostrich-farming towns and vineyards present another take on the Cape. For extra kicks, try bungee jumping or cage-diving among Great Whites.

Terbodore Coffee Franschhoek

Not much has changed since we've roasted our very first batch of coffee in 2004 on the Terbodore farm in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Sure, the batches got bigger as word of our coffee spread and our commitment to the craft grew. But despite our pursuit for the perfect cup, our Great Dane, now grey around the muzzle, still has a keener interest in the whereabouts of farm cats rather than the rich, defined flavours of the perfect brew. Still his presence has become symbolic of everything that we strive for the moment we fire up the roaster - heritage, courage, patience and dependability. From the first day we started roasting, we took great care to procure only the finest green coffee beans. Combining skill and patience, we sift and roast our beans, consistently producing coffee we gladly put our name to. We pride ourselves on being one of the most honest coffee brands around, not compromising on the taste and never forgetting who we are. Then there is our companion's courage, something we needed in no short supply to open our second roastery in the Cape Winelands. Thanks to this leap of faith, we can now make our coffee available to connoisseurs around the country - still produced with the same love and meticulous care as we did in 2004. We hope that you enjoy our product and craft as much as we do. Because as artisanal coffee roasters we feel that life is long enough for a slowly percolated cup, even in dog years.

Romantiques

If you are looking for a unique experience you should certainly include Romantiques in your itinerary. You will find the extensive array of antiques and memorabilia fascinating and all are displayed in a picturesque setting in an old property in the heart of the town. If you are looking for militaria, vintage toys, china and silverware, vintage clothing and everything in between, you won’t be disappointed. Children will be fascinated by the various items, many of which they will only have read about. There is plenty of on-site parking and card facilities are available if you find something you simply must have. Set aside a couple of hours to enjoy the setting and indulge in a cup of coffee or play the vintage pin ball machines.

We stumbled upon this shop on our visit to Hermanus, and it turned out to be the highlight of our trip. Its like stepping into the past, with rooms dedicated to various themes such a military memorabilia, victorian clothing, vintage toys and tea sets and so much more. We ended up spending nearly two hours there, finishing up with a few games of old fashioned pin ball machine which was such fun. Do yourself a favour, stop by for a visit when you are in the area, you won't be dissapointed.
