I booked this tour for six of us because I knew we would have a Sunday afternoon to kill in a cold Portland in February. Now I dont drink but I would say this was a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting tour. All very friendly too. Well recommended, we may just go back next year.

Smiling Hill Farm

My kiddo wanted to see chickens, so the first place that popped up was Smiling Hill Farms. I knew they had some barnyard animals there, but what I didn't know was to what extent. For $13.00 which included child/adult admission and 4 tokens we walked into the barnyard. It felt like a step back in time. It's farm animals meets wooden playground. The place is mapped out pretty well so you pretty much can do a big circle and not get lost. i felt that it was a place that I could let me child run around and not have to worry. So did it not only have chickens, but it also had goats, pigs, horses ducks rabbits, OREO COWS, mini donkeys the works.
It was a nice fall outing, we were there for 2 hours, but we probably could have stayed longer. And don't mind the goats they could be a little pushy, they just know what's in your hand.

We had a group outing to the park over the summer. The park in just the right size, easy parking, inexpensive tickets and good viewing from anywhere in the park. We had a great time. This is a great place to bring the whole family without breaking the bank. Food is a little picey, but it is to be expected at a ballpark. However, leave your water bottles and food at home, they will confiscate them at security screening. All in all, a great time!

Ship traffic here runs the gamut from lobster boats to oil tankers and cruise lines; also look for the many photogenic lighthouses.

The Casco bay is a very special place. Deep blue waters and a great many islands, many inhabited and worthy of your exploration. The crew are nice enough and help with your questions. There are numerous selections on the ferry schedule to choose one that fits your day schedule. Toilets on board. take some beer/wine with you to drink and enjoy. Excellent job.

Casco Bay Islands

An archipelago of islands off of Portland.

Take the Casco Bay Lines ferry to all the different islands, or check time for the mail drop ferry. It stops at, I believe 7 different islands, unloading and picking up cargo, cars, etc. Check my pic, for the smallest working lighthouse. The ferry is very calm, but it is windy on the water and the air is cold, even in summer, so dress accordingly. Pick up on the waterfront in Portland.

We had so much fun on the mailboat cruise! Even though it was January and probably about 10 degrees, this trip was worth our while. Understandably (given the season), there weren't many other people on the ferry. As a result, we could move freely around the boat to follow the sun on deck, spread out indoors, and ask the crew numerous questions about the islands. This was our first trip to Portland, and probably our favorite activity (other than dining in the wonderful restaurants, of course) of our weekend. The trip takes 3 hours and costs a mere $16. While there are a couple of vending machines on board, you're welcome to bring your own food for the trip. A great way to see the coastline...loved it!

This is an excellent museum to visit. Friday nights are free. They have many interesting pieces including a couple of Picassos. They also had an exhibit of local artist which was very interesting. Also the local exhibition of local children's art was enjoyable and a way to get the youth interested in the arts.

Maine Mall

Reviewed By Maurene_K - Dover, New Hampshire

The Maine Mall is a large enclosed mall. It’s easily accessible from Route I-95 via Exit 45 or from Route I-295 Exit 1 / Maine Turnpike Approach Road toward Route I-95. Both lead to Maine Mall Road.

In my opinion, it’s the best mall in Northern New England. I think that this mall is well designed with a variety of stores clustered near the anchor stores.

It’s a destination in itself. On my most-recent visit during a mini vacation-holiday shopping trip, I spend he better part of a day browsing and shopping here.

Anchor stores include Best Buy, Macy’s, JC Penney, and Sears.

There are several entrances. Most are near the anchor stores.

The Maine Mall offers stroller rentals and has changing stations nearby. It also has a convenience store and a bank. Not many malls have these features.

Closest to Macy’s are Eddie Bauer, Apple, Olympia Sports, Abercrombie & Fitch, Gymboree, Aldo, Pottery Barn, LOFT, Banana Republic, Things Remembered, EXPRESS Women's Clothing, and Carhartt. Maine Mall Motors is part of the mall in a stand-alone area near Macy’s.

Stores near JC Penney are Hannoush Jewelers, Spencer Gifts, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Pac Sun, GNC, Aéropostale, Hot Topic, Forever 21, Cellairis, Journeys, Torrid, Claire’s, Kay Jewelers, On Time, Island Carousel, Motherhood Maternity, Go! Calendars & Games, Team Spirit, Just Cozy, Game Stop, Yogibo, ICING, La Biotique, Zumiez, H&M, and Lids, plus wireless phone companies US Cellular and Verizon Wireless. Services available in this area of the mall include Master Cuts, Regis Salon, Mayflower Massage, and T & C Nails as well as opticians Lens Crafters and Pro Vision.

Most of the in-mall restaurants are near JC Penney. They include Qdoba Mexican Grill, Amato’s, Arby’s, Starbucks, Charleys Philly Steaks, Panda Express, Mrs. Field's Cookies, Papyrus, Krispy Krunchy Chicken, Red Mango Yogurt & Smoothies, Johnny Rockets, Sarku Japan, and Villa Fresh Italian Kitchen.

Stores close to Sears include some of my favorites Newbury Comics, J. Jill, Payless ShoeSource, and Bath & Body Works. Others are Old Navy, American Eagle Outfitters, Justice, Foot Locker, Super Shoes, Ifix Here, The Children's Place, and Sleep Number By Select Comfort, plus an AT&T store.

The Old Country Buffet restaurant is adjacent to Sears.

Around Best Buy are more of my favorites: Yankee Candle, Hickory Farms, Brookstone, and Teavana. Another is L'OCCITANE EN PROVENCE which makes all-natural botanical skincare and fragrance items that are comparable to the Yves Rocher brand. More stores include Clarks, The Body Shop, Microsoft, J. Crew Mercantile, David’s Bridal, Chico’s, Finish Line, Pandora, Garage, Sunglass Hut, Francesca’s, Williams-Sonoma, Origins Skincare, Swarovski, Lovesac, Sephora, Lush Cosmetics, The Walking Company, Michael Kors, The Paper Store, and Soma. Wireless providers nearby include Sprint and T-Mobile.

The Bangor Savings Bank and Maine Mall Convenience are near Best Buy.

Places for some fast food near Best Buy are Gloria Jean’s Gourmet Coffee and Twisted Soft Pretzels.

Pier 1 Imports, DXL Men’s Apparel, and Ulta Beauty are outside the enclosed mall near JC Penney.

Jared Galleria of Jewelry is outside the enclosed mall near Sears.

Victoria’s Secret has two stores; one focuses on the PINK brand.

During my lengthy visit, most of the stores were doing a brisk business with holiday shoppers.

From past experience and this visit, I found that the best sale prices were at Macy’s and JC Penney with Sears a close contender. I especially like the Last Chance sale racks at Macy's. My latest bargains there were 70% off; and, the items were current fashions that could be worn from fall through early spring.

I rate The Maine Mall at 4.25. I recommend a shopping excursion here.

Eastern Promenade

Reviewed By Sharon M - Abingdon, Maryland

What a beautiful place for walking. We were visiting Portland while we were on a cruise. Instead of turning left at the cruise terminal, we turned right and found ourselves on this lovely promenade. It is flat so it is good for walking or biking. There are lovely views of the water and sometimes, if you time it right, an old-fashioned train will go by and toot its whistle.
