Lovely Gardens not as good as it was back in the day , all but abandoned by Wakefield council . Fortunately a group called Friends Of Friarwood Valley Gardens, Pontefract are doing a great job of keeping it tidy and well groomed .

This is a really good park for families with young kids - one of the best in Leeds I think. There's a large playground, large sandpit, Japanese garden (haven't been to that yet but looks lovely through the hole in the wall), skate park and a cafe that sometimes has a free bouncy castle outside it for customers.

York Gate is widely considered one of the UK’s best small gardens, designed in the Arts & Crafts style as a series of beautifully crafted outdoor rooms. These intricate spaces offer inspiration to implement in your own garden. It was created by the Spencer family during the 20th century and entrusted to Perennial in 1994 so that the garden could live on and continue to be enjoyed by the public. Relax in York Gate's new cafe and sun terrace serving brunch and light lunches using handpicked produce from the vegetable garden, homemade sandwiches, cakes and a selection of speciality teas and coffees, whilst overlooking the newly built Mediterranean sunken garden. The new facilities also include a larger plant nursery and gift shop, selling plants propagated from the garden and a beautiful range of gifts for the home and garden. York Gate also boasts a traditional wildflower meadow to enjoy the wilder areas of York Gate. Opening times Please visit yorkgate.org.uk for details
Last we came here must have been over twenty years ago. The place has a large carpark now, a gift shop in the house, a medium sized plant sales and a very nice cafe where we sat outside after our walk around the lovely gardens. The charm of this place is the fact it is manageable to walk around, small only one acre of gardens but so much in the space, so many little gardens within gardens. The pinetum has some wonderful spruce and firs, herb garden is very much like it was all those years ago, there are ponds and very unusual plants. There are seats here and there, the garden sits on a slope at the front, my only criticism is that there are absolutely NO indications what the plants are. However some of the plants are sold at the nursery. We bought several up I do hope they grow successfully in our garden. Cafe is clean and roomy.

Tropical World at Roundhay Park is one of the most well-loved family attractions in Leeds and only three miles from the city centre. At Tropical World you can take a trek through the rainforest; stopping off briefly in the outback of Australia before a quick excursion through the desert, and all in the same morning! It is home to some old friends that include rare birds, crocodiles, butterflies, bats, spiders, snakes and the meerkats - the cutest family in Leeds. It re-opened in March 2015. This follows some stunning renovations that include the aquarium area transformed into a new Amazon themed zone where you can see new residents including piranhas and salamanders.
Tropical world is a fantastic place. I was amazed at how large it is inside. Beautiful zones to walk through with birds and butterflies flying around you. You really do feel as if you are in the tropics. All animals are well looked after and look happy and healthy. I recommend this place highly for families

Always love coming hear at Christmas to look at the displays and get ideas for Christmas and this year didn’t disappoint There is a massive range of Christmas decorations, trees and everything else you can think of all set out to give ideas but also to suite every budget As always a trip to The Orchard restaurant is in order for drink and a spot of lunch It was busy which is to be expected at lunch time however the staff were really friendly and helpful as when we got our table it needed clearing and the young lady was on her way over to clear the table just as we got there and apologised for it not being clear quicker which was so nice I had the soup of the day which was leek and potato which was lovely and thick and full of flavour this was served with thick fresh brown bloomer bread and a fresh cream scone and wow what a scone it was I do have to say it had a bit too much cream for my taste so I did take some out but the scone it’s self was very nice needless to say my self and my daughters were very full as we all had the same Would definitely recommend a visit here
