Washington DC is a hub for American politics and history. Attracting as many school field trips as it does travelers the district offers a peek into the country’s democratic origin. There are plenty of free museums to take advantage of but the real draw here is the memorials and monuments dedicated to great American leaders. Spend some contemplative time at the Reflecting Pool within the National Mall, among the most patriotic places in the country.

Logan Circle is a great neighborhood to visit and these Barbies are hilarious. Grab yourself done brunch on 14th street and pop over for a chuckle after a few mimosas.

The Atlas Performing Arts Center is a non-profit performing arts venue in a historic theater. We’re the cultural anchor of the H Street, Northeast community in Washington, DC. The Atlas fosters and presents stellar art in film, dance, music, theater, vocal and choral work, spoken word, and beyond.
As part of their series on African-American playwrights, we went to see Lynne Nottage's Fabulation or the Re-Education of Undine. I hadn't seen anything by her and had high expectations. However, this particular play was written years before she got her act together: WAY roo much of Undine's character's lines are asides to the audience designed to tell you what Nottage hadn't yet learned to show. But the minor characters were well-drawn and well-acted. Anyway...the Lang Theater on the upstairs level of the Atlas Center is an intimate theatre space: comfortable seats, good angle so your view isn't blocked by the person in front of you. Excellent acoustics, dubbing, lighting and set design. We don't always love the plays (they hit about 65% in my experience), but we LOVE seeing theatre in a place where the racial balance averages about 35-45% African-American.

On my recent DC visit, I was staying just up the street from this beautiful old church. As I was walking past, I asked a churchgoer if I could have a quick look at the beautiful organ. They invited me in for service, even after I explained I was actually on my way to Catholic mass at the nearby parish. The artwork, architecture and setting were beautiful and the choir sounded delightful. After services, I was also invited for food and drink in the church hall. A very welcoming congregation to this out if area visitor. And a very inclusive ministry. All are welcome.

The Wharf is a waterfront neighborhood, home to thousands of residents and employees, three hotels, a 6000-seat music venue, and over 50 shops and restaurants. Throughout the year, the community hosts vibrant festivals, events, and free outdoor concerts.
I decided to get out of the house and I've made it to the Wharf. I've know about the construction, but I didn't know it was done. The pier, the restaurants, the boats, the ice rink...People cooking marshmallows in a real fire... Everything was amazing! I felt like in Seattle, but I was in my hometown.

Anyone with an interest in military history should make a quick stop at Pershing Park. In addition to a statue of General Pershing there are timeline tablets related to U.S. involvement in the battles of WW I. It is right across the street from both the White House Visitor Center and the White House itself.

The section of Massachusetts Avenue with many embassies and the house of the Vice President located on one end.
WE REALLY ENJOYED walking and driving through this majestic neighborhood with the embassies from many countries and gorgeous private homes of various architectural styles. Spring is in bloom in DC and the cherry blossoms were gorgeous. Other flowering trees and shrubs are showing their spring colors and the well landscaped yards here were full of golden daffodils and jonquils.

The U Street Corridor is home to some of DC's iconic foods. Ben's Chili Bowl, home of the half-smoke, is there plus an area referred to by some as "Little Ethiopia" due to the large number of Ethiopian restaurants.
