Villers Abbey (abbaye de Villers) is an ancient Cistercian abbey located near the town of Villers-la-Ville, 50 minutes from Brussels. Founded in 1146, the abbey was abandoned in 1796. Most of the site has since fallen into ruins.
This monastery that was built in the Middle Ages was a great find. The atmosphere of the old ruins is magnificent! If you are into photography this is a nice place to take some great pictures! This place breaths history. Till June there is an exhibition of the photographer Matthieu Ricard. After I visited the museum I walked 10 km in the woods. There are different marked walks that you can do.

Just outside of Brusells, continue the celebration of cartoons at the Herge Musee (Herge Museum). The museum is dedicated to the creator of Tintin, following him and his life, including his personal experiences.
Belgium, being cartoonists heaven shows proudly its heritage here and there. So does the futuristic building containing the Hergémuseeum outside Brussels. A short trip by train, a short walk and you are about to see incredible sketches as well as getting to know the highly regarded man behind the images. A significant moment for Tintin-lovers.

The Lion's Mound offers a unique view of the battlefield after a memorable ascent of 226 steps! As last authentic witness of the battle, the Barn of Hougoumont features a brand-new scenography made of 4 exhibition rooms as well as an impressive multimedia show.
I'm glad to have traveled to Waterloo during my trip to Belgium. To have visited the Memorial Waterloo 1815 as well as the Wellington Museum was a great opportunity to re-learn history. The exhibits, immersive scenery and what they call "multi-sensory" experience and the interactive trail make this memorial museum a must-visit and worth the bus trip from Brussels to Waterloo. I also had the opportunity to go up the Lion's Mound and watch their canon-firing reenactment (I'm not sure if it is a year-round attraction or just for June for the anniversary). If there were more time, I would have loved to visit the other three attractions included in the pass I bought. It included Memorial Waterloo, Musee Wellington, Napoleon's House and Mont St Jean. But if one is short for time, I think the best place is to see the Memorial and Lion's Mound!

Walked here from Dolce La Hulpe. The walk was very beautiful but when we got to the Chateau de la Hulpe it was amazing. The grounds are beautiful and the man-made lake was stunning. It looked like they were setting up for a wedding to take place later in the day and I couldn't think of a more magical place to get married.

This historic farmhouse, the last authentic witness to the battle on 18 June 1815, accommodates a pioneering multimedia installation that tells the story of the “battle within the battle”. The show combines innovation with respect for memory. Hougoumont Farm was the scene of fierce and deadly fighting. It is located in a forward position that protected the Allies’ right flank, and was where Napoleon’s brother sparked off the battle. What was only supposed to be a diversionary manoeuvre at first became the most violent point of the battle. Throughout the day, the French assaults here were furious but in vain. The main building was burned to the ground. The house we see today is in fact the former gardener’s cottage.
If you have heard of the Battle of Waterloo you must visit. If you have the slightest interest this will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. I took advantage of the opportunity to stay in the landmark trust property for four days. Learn some of the history then see where it all happened. Real history at first hand.
