Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway

Visited the Karangahake Gorge with our 2 adult children and our 10yr old - although extremely busy (hard to get a car park) well worth the stop! If walking distances is a problem for you - you can drive right up to the waterfall Owharoa off state highway 2 onto Waitawheta Rd. Car park is just to the left after going over the bridge and the track to the waterfall is just up the road on the right (only 2min walk). You can swim in the waterfall but it can get overcrowded. And no pushchairs or mobility access. The cafe across the road from the main Karangahake Gorge car park The Talisman Cafe was also good, homemade bacon and egg pies with homemade chutney - very good and the coffee was also good.

Victoria Battery Tramway & Museum Society

The Victoria Battery Tramway and Museum is well worth a visit to see how mining used to be done. The old machinery and tools have been preserved, and the displays are well laid out. The volunteer docents are knowledgeable about the history of the workings and of the Waihi mine. The walk through the tunnel is worth it for those who are not claustrophobic.

The walk around Martha Gold Mine is not hard, only a few hilly bits, which takes about an hour at a steady pace. We did it in an hour 30 minutes as we stopped a lot to take in the mine and read the information signs along the way.
