Bristling with beautiful lakes, splashing rivers, rugged peaks and looming castles, Vorarlberg is tucked between Switzerland and Germany. This spirited state is dotted with Bauhaus-inspired architecture, eco-friendly dwellings and tiny towns, bristling with spires. Capital Bregenz is the main draw in this alpine locale. Cobblestone streets and a lovely lakeside setting add to its charms. Renowned for its cheese and dairies, Vorarlberg is also a popular spot for skiing and other winter sports.

After a lovely drive through the villages of Brand and Innertal and an exhilarating ride on the Lunerseebahn you arrive on the shores of the Lunersee itself. The stunning scenery can be viewed at leisure sat outside the Douglas Hutte or enjoyed whilst travelling the very popular circular route around the lake. At almost 2000 meters high a gentle stroll is what most people prefer but for those of you after a little adventure there is the Schesaplana, the highest peak in the area at 2965 meters, with the popular Totalphutte halfway up. The views are to die for, which ever route you take and you just can't get enough of the fresh mountain air. You can quite easily spend a day here just wandering about.

The best skiing in the Alps and where alpine skiing was born. Something for everyone. Great pistes, great ski routes. Lech-Zürs is more suited for families, St. Anton for the younger crowd. Crowd is not really the word to use, as the pistes are very rarely overcrowded. Most of the lifts heave seat heating and the panorama is breath taking.

Amazing lookout! If you are passing by Bregenz, definitely recommend to stop for an hour or two , get up there and enjoy the fresh air. Up there you can see 3 countries in the same time, unique destination, of course if you have some more time , get your hiking shoes out and you can hike up. Because we did not had that much time we decided to take the ride up. Paid 33 euros for 3 adults, round trip. Not sure why everything was closed up there today, 26 Dec, maybe because it is Christmas, so you couldn’t have anything to drink or eat up there. Otherwise everything was fine. Enjoy

Whether you are an opera fan or not this is a must-do! We have gone 4 times now and each time has been so impressive. The stage is just incredible and the setting couldn't be better. The opera starts when the sun is still out and you can enjoy the background of the Lake of Constance and the Alps. As the opera progresses the sun sets and with each stage of the sun setting brings upon a completely different feel to the setting and atmosphere. The opera gets repeated so I would recommend going every other year.

If you want an white nature experience you will never forget go for a winter daytrip to the Silvretta reservoir. It’s organised in a perfect way: take the Vermuntbahn lift from Partenen, at the mountain station Mercedes mini buses are ready for you: you can take luggage and skis with you. You don’t believe what you see: the bus is bringing you through the mountain in private tunnels, only as broad as the bus and forbidden to pedestrians, to the white and silent world of Piz Buin and the Silvretta Reservoir. There is one ski lift with three easy ski runs and a well prepared walking path in the snow: see my pictures
