What to do and see in Virginia, United States: The Best Biking Trails

February 15, 2022 Roseanne Arnett

Virginia can make American history come alive. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, tour Civil War battlefields, explore the living history museum at Williamsburg… the possibilities are endless (if the kids object, break up the historical sightseeing with a visit to Busch Gardens). Arlington, site of Arlington National Cemetery, is just across the Potomac River from all the major sites in D.C. In addition to beaches and historical attractions, Virginia has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Active families will love the Blue Ridge Highlands, where hiking, canoeing and tubing are just a few of the activities offered. Couples might enjoy a romantic mountain cabin in Virginia after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

We love this path for bike riding and the addition of goats to help clear things without chemicals is so nice. It can get crowded but you can definitely get in a great ride and stop for food. magnolias at the Mill makes a great stop!

This scenic rail to trail park extends for about 34 miles from Damascus, Va to Abingdon. I walked for about an hour and a half and really liked it. There seemed to be a lot of trees along the trail. I'm guessing this would be a great place for a summer hike or bike ride if you like well shaded trails.

We had a great ride on the Virginia Capital Trail! Traffic along the way are good to give bikes the right-of-way. There are two restaurants close to half-way that are accommodating to cyclists.

When we received our bikes from Adventure Damascus bicycle and outdoor Company , they also gave us a bag with tools and 2 spare intertubes and a great map with all the necessary information for telephone stations, bathrooms and the restaurant Midway. As we were enjoying our beautiful and scenic ride by the River we encountered a couple with flat tire. They had absolutely no tools no extra tires or Maps where they rented their bike. We stopped ,gave them a helping hand and used one of our intertubes to help them get on their way. When we were back from our beautiful venture we told the shopkeeper who was extremely nice that we gave away one of our intertubes. We asked if we could pay him.He said no he was just glad that we stopped to help the couple on our way down. This is a great company with safety in mind. It made our and other couples experience even better.
