Fort Liberia

Fort Liberia is one of the Vauban Fortress located in the upper part of Villefranche-de-Conflent, in Conflent Region, in the South of France. It was built after Pyrenees Treaty (17th Century). Nowadays you can visit this fortress. In fact, you go up with a 4*4 (or by walk) and you can go down by 4*4 again or go down the stairs. My 4 years old daughter and I tried this last option and it was very funny. In the fortress, you can go up to the ramparts and see wonderful views of the town and mountains. Great! also, it is possible learn about the life in this place during the last centuries. Very interesting. Ramparts of Villefranche-de-Conflent

First built in the Middle Ages, Villefranche-de-Conflent city walls were deeply transformed by Vauban during the 17th century. These walls are unique, because they are composed of two layered covered patrol path. The exceptional aspect of the walls of Villefranche-de-Conflent allowed its registration on the world heritage list of UNESCO(with 11 other sites fortified by Vauban, Réseau Vauban) in July 2008.

Getting there is the beginning of your tour towards the past; the two rivers that meet at the corner of the massive walls! Going into the little village is also an awesome way of imagining living in the medieval times closed in between four walls: the tiny streets, the well kept buildings,,,ahhh! We went twice: once during the week and then back again for lunch on the weekend. Fantastic both times because we were able to walk around the village on our own without a hurry, and then again but lots of people and all the tiny shops open to the public

Grotte des Canalettes

THE CAVES OF LES CANALETTES: A MAGICAL DAY OUT! The caves of Les Grandes Canalettes are located at a mere 300 metres from the UNESCO World Heritage medieval town of Villefranche-de-Conflent in the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, and at the foot of the Mont Canigou massif on the road to Corneilla-de-Conflent and Vernet-les-Bains. Come and spend a magical day with the family in one of the most beautiful caves in France. The caves are accessible to the general public but the notion of discovery and adventure are ever present throughout your visit into the bowels of the earth…

Grotte des Canalettes is a cave with a lot of stalactites and stalagmites with wonderful natural forms. It is located in the surroundings of Villefranche-de-Conflent, a walled town in the South of France. I came here with my 4 years old daughter, and after she catched a jacket, we began the visit: great! there are some fantastic rooms with a lot of natural rock formations. She enjoyed a lot seeing the natural forms and discovering them. At the end, there was performed a show with colours and music: very nice! Also she liked very much. Really, a wonderful visit for all family (there are some stairs, so for seniors is a bit difficult).
