There’s a car park with toilet (portaloo) opposite the chateau entrance. There were several friendly staff or volunteers in the ticket office, and they spoke excellent English. The chateau was left to fall into ruin after a fire in the 1930’s and it is now being rescued by an enthusiastic group. It’s extraordinarily beautiful, and the plans for restoration are particularly innovative - rather than faithfully returning it to former splendour they are working hard to conserve the trees and plants that have colonised the chateau. You will be mostly outside so it’s best to visit on a dry day. There’s some walking involved so wear practical shoes, it’s all fairly flat and easy to navigate. It’s not a large site so you can easily see it all in about 2 hours. Utterly beautiful, well worth a visit, I will certainly go back next time I’m in that area to see how they are getting on with the restoration.

Church of Notre Dame la Grande

To see a medieval church still with its interior decoration in tact is so unusual it produces a real wow factor. It reminds us that was what the majority of churches were like before subsequent generations painted them over or demolished them. It’s a truly beautiful survivor that shouldn’t be missed

La Vallee des Singes

“La Vallée des Singes”, the unique wildlife park dedicated to primates was founded in 1998. It is a place of amusement and knowledge promoting ecological awareness. Since its creation, the main objective of the park is to contribute in protection of nature, environment and primates. La Vallée des Singes offers to its visitors a unique experience through a full immersion into the fascinating world of primates. This wildlife park is 100% different; there are no cages, no fences but 450 monkeys freely living on a wide area of 22 hectares. You have the possibility to observe the little monkeys with only a few steps away from you, as well as the great apes on their island.

Such a wonderful place being so close to the monkeys. Some are in enclosures, but they all looked happy and healthy. The place is vast. It's a great place for all ages and so worth a visit.

Baptistere Saint-Jean

I came here on a recommendation from a family member before I was due to get a flight out of Poitiers. It is quite a small building so not something you would visit for a long time, but it certainly is a fascinating glimpse into the past. You pay a small charge to enter and get an information booklet to go along with it. It is very peaceful and majestic inside, and seeing as there were only a few other visitors when I went it had a good atmosphere.
