The only narrow-gauge railway line that still provides regular passenger traffic. You have a chance to go on a ride twice a day. Enjoy rides with a diesel locomotive or you can look out for special rides with steam one. There are two interesting exhibitions in both cities - Alūksne and Gulbene. You should definitely visit them.

Piece and Tranquillity. Gauja is beautiful! Recommended to go during the week days ( less people) We went on Monday. Left car in Sigulda Pludmale ( Camping Site on the beach near the bridge & Tartzan fun park)./ Had a ride to Ligatne and started our trip down the river back to Sigulda ( trip 6hrs, but there is a choice of shorter distances) You don't need to row much, as the river had strong current and takes you with it. Stopped for a swim on the beautiful sandy beaches. Child still had energy to go on the rides at Tarzan. Don't forget suncream and a hat :) P.S. This trip can be done for free if you have your own boat/ kayak and a lift .

Honouring traditions, Valmiermuiža Craft Brewery brews natural and non-pasteurized beer. In turn, the adjoining Beer Kitchen offers new combinations of flavours and emotions on a plate, characteristic of the season and with their roots in Latvia’s land. Here you have an opportunity to become acquainted with the cornerstones of brewing beer and to enjoy a story of harmony between beer and amazing dishes, allowing different flavours to play on your tongue!

It takes (by train) 1 1/2 hours from Riga, but the visit to Cesis Castle is absolutely worth the effort. On the compound there are three attractions, the new castle, the medieval castle and the castle park. The old castle was built in the 13th century by the Livonian Order, but later fell into neglect and disrepair. In the late 18th century the groundsd were acquired by a Baltic-German Noble, Count Sievers, who had the new castle built. Later in the area below the castle the park was constructed. Today the ruins of the old castle and a museum inside the new castle can be visited for an entrance fee. Inside the ruins of the old castle it is possible to climb the western tower, from where on has an impressive view. I have done that during my first visit to Cesis in 2018. On this second occasion I spent most of my time in the castle park (no entrance fee) from where one can admire the castle from below, either walking around or while sitting on one of the numerous benches. On the grounds of the castle park one can find also the orthodox Church of the Transfiguration of Christ, built in the 1840s.

Alūksne New Palace is surrounded by a park with oak trees planted in the 18th century. The park is unique for its small architectural buildings. An exciting walk along its paths visiting the Aeolus' temple, the Granite Obelisk, the Alexander's Pavilion, and other buildings that leads to the palace with Neo-Gothic nobility cannot be found in any other place in Latvia.
In the center of Aluksne is a castle and a manor park. Easy to access. In the museum you can learn more about the history of the city.
