Our cruise ended in Melbourne and we had decided to stay there for a few days along with 3 other couples we were traveling with. Friends of ours had recommended Melbourne Private Tours and we are so glad they did. We booked 2 tours with them. The first was a city tour for the day we arrived. Dylan was our guide and he was terrific! He is very knowledgeable, has a great sense of humor and made for a very fun day. We went to the Botanic Gardens and Shrine of Remembrance, cottages on the beach and saw lots of street art. Dylan also made sure we had plenty of time to explore the market. When we booked the tour we asked if it could include Jewish sites but since it was Saturday we were told we would only be able to see them from the outside. But Dylan and MPT went the extra mile and made arrangements with the synagogue so that we could visit towards the end of services. The synagogue was beautiful and the Rabbi and congregation were so welcoming and we were so moved, it is the most memorable experience of our trip. The next day we did the Great Ocean Road tour to the 12 Apostles. It was a 13 hour day and it was terrific. Our guide for this tour was Neil and he was great. He took us all along the coastal road where we saw amazing views and lots of surfers. We stopped at a wonderful coffee shop with delicious pastries. But I recommend not eating too much at the coffee shop because you don’t want to spoil your appetite for the fabulous lunch that comes a few hours later. Lunch was family style and the food was ready when we got there. It was so good we asked to meet the chef so that we could applaud him and his wonderful staff. Along the way Neil stopped at a few different locations so that we could see kangaroo, koalas and birds up close in the wild. Neil got a crimson rosella to sit on my husband’s hand and we got great pictures of a kookaburra. The 12 Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge were amazingly beautiful and as an extra treat we saw an Echidna in the bushes. We had a fabulous time.

Utilising the latest in handheld laser projection technology, writer and historian Michael Shelford, beams images of notorious characters from the 1890's to the 1930's onto the buildings and streets they once inhabited. Take a walk through downtown Melbourne and learn of an era in which there was much more on offer at the local candy store than just sweets and soft drinks. Explore Melbourne’s underworld c.1870’s to 1930’s, an era in which Melbourne’s downtown slum district, ‘Little Lon’, was mostly run by women. Learn about the battle for supremacy, madams who stood their ground against well-known gangsters such as Squizzy Taylor, and an all-female crime syndicate known as ‘The Combine’. Stop outside buildings which were once brothels and sly grog shops (speak easies), and hear the stories of what occurred within their walls and on the streets and laneways around them. Shootings, bombings, bashings, brothels, robberies, opium, cocaine and sly grog (speak easies).

Inclusions: Toilet facilities are available at the Coopers Inn Hotel where the tour group meets. A tumbler of water and drinking glasses are also there for the use of customers., The tour experience is enhanced with the latest in hand-held laser projection technology.

Exclusions: Food and beverage, (apart from water which is free), at the starting location can be purchased at your own expense.

We joined six others for the Scary Tales & Hidden Ales Bar Tour yesterday. Our guide Daniel was entertaining and engaging. He brought the history of Vic Market and a few other key historic Melbourne buildings and sites to life with his talented storytelling. It was so much fun. Daniel made it easy for us all to chat with each other too whilst enjoying refreshments during the tour. We are from Melbourne and enjoyed learning more about the history of our city.
