Especially loved the Free Tram Zone, made getting around the city centre so easy and was convenient for travellers.

Ascot Vale Station dates from 1860, making it one of the earliest sursviving stations in Melbourne's metropolitan railway network. It's a good-looking structure, made of red brick. It served the private Melbourne to Essendon line, but the line folded in 1864. The line was revivied under government ownership in 1871. It's still earning its keep, as one of the key stations on the Craigieburn Line. The suburb of Ascot Vale underwent a gentrification process and now it is a moderately expensive area, close to the City. The Station is convenient to the 57, 59 and 82 trams.

I highly recommends using the v line train service throughout Victoria In the last week I have been to Geelong Warrnambool and Bendigo and the trains have been comfortable speedy and run with clockwork precision at very reasonable rates So much easier and less stressful than driving

In Melbourne for a week and travelled on the Trains and Trams with a Myki card which we purchased from the train station near ouraccomadation. Getting around the city was really easy with the free travel on trams within the CBD. They came with amazing frequency and we had a map which made it really easy to get where we wanted to go hoping off and on. We took the train to Ballarat and bus to Sovereign HIll. The trains were punctual and buses met the train and vice versa. Also took the train to Brighton to see the bathing sheds. We were really impressed with the public transport.

Metro Trains have a contractual obligation to run their trains as scheduled and to be punctual. If they do not, they are fined (as rthey were recently) and passengers are compensated. Fortunately, they rarely miss their deadlines, as the people of Melbourne rely on the trains to get to work, get into the city -- in fact, to get just about everywhere. The trains these days are clean and the vandalism of windows seem to have been abated by a new form of glass. Considering that the trains carry many more people than they did 20 years ago, Metro Trains are doing a good job. By the way, you must have a Myki card to travel, find out what is best for you.
