What to do and see in Vernazza, Liguria: The Best Things to do Good for Couples

May 31, 2021 Janette Largent

With Cinque Terre’s only proper harbor, Vernazza has a long history as a fishing village. While there is a small beach, sightseeing is more common in this astoundingly beautiful cliffside town. Highlights include the 16th-century Belforte Tower (which offers incredible views of the area), the 11th-century Doria Castle and the 14th-century Santa Margherita d'Antiochia church. It involves a steep hike, but the shrine at Nostra Signora Di Reggio (Our Lady of Reggio) is well worth it.

Do NOT leave Vernazza without going to this place. Beautiful rustic-industrial interior and well-displayed spirits. Pesto class is phenomenal. Worth every €. Alessi is a charming teacher; his knowledge of the region and ability to impart the local history of not just the wines but the tools, oils, and ingredients makes the class a uniquely memorable experience. He also happens to be a skilled mixologist, humbly dishing out the best drinks in town. Carol is sweet and attentive. Together they are very warm and welcoming hosts.

Vernazza is one of the fishing villages in the Cinque Terre National Park. You can get there by train or take a scenic trail walk from Monterosso the other fishing village. Walking will take an hour or three, depending on if you take the short or long route. Either way it is a beautiful place to go to. When in Vernazza we didn't go to the Doria castle or Belforte and it was too cold to swim. But we had a great time to enjoy the breathtaking coastline; the rock formation is just magnificent there. We also had a nice walk on the long dock and jetty, and visited the church of Santa Margarita di Antiochia (built in 1318). Happy Travelling!

Santa Margarita festival in June was so nice day market- early evening parade through town, traditional bands, church service and blessing --and amazing fireworks over the water at the beach at night. Very nice family scene. Special and unique time to be in Vernazza!

The SVA path between Vernazza and Corniglia is a pleasant walk offering some amazing views. The path will cost you 7.50 to walk, which you can get as part of the wider Cinque Terre pass. It's popular with tourists so expect plenty of company.

Porto di Vernazza is the old harbour of the tiny town called Vernazza in Cinque Terre National Park, in La Spezia Region, in the North of Italy. It is the most beautiful place in the town, where you can see wonderful views of the town, the sea and the coast. Really, the little harbour is charming, and. you can arrive here from the station walking in the main street. (See also Vernazza and Parco Nazionale Cinque Terre)
