Worth the drive down. One of the most interesting geological areas I have seen. We enjoyed the dirt road driving in the middle of nowhere. Very quiet and peaceful.

we had a day to "kill"in Vernal and wandered into the museum thinking it would be a half hour filler. BUT this place is fabulous...the curation, the collection, the documentation is astounding in it's detail and depth. Each display, on almost every aspect of the town and area's history and people held me captive and I had to read everything to the very end instead of the usual touristy quick skim that I would do. This town was so alive in this museum, the individual stories, the history of the culture, the development, the industry and the people who impacted as well as those who just lived their lives and happened to leave items that were now on display. And even a collection of dolls upstairs...my least favourite thing to look at...but they turned out to be fashioned on all the USA first ladies from the first to the most recent (well, Michelle but not Melania yet) Anyway, stories about the ladies themselves kept me rapt for an hour while my husband watched a video of the railroads, which I then joined him and we spent another half an hour..commemorative rifles, working rifles form the past, saddles - the leatherwork stupendous, machinery, Indian clothing of stunning beauty, archeology in abundance, and then a lovely art display to top it off. You may not have a reason to be in Vernal but this would make it a must stop. And the lady working there was just wonderful and helpful. Typical of the "attitude" of that museum and the efforts there.

For quite a while we weren't sure our hike was going in the correct direction as we were the only ones and just as we about to give up there was an offical sign. Totally worth the huffing and puffing of these two FL flat landers.
