Historic church withfresco murals from the 14th to 17th centuries
It is a hard climb to reach the church particularly in the hot summer months but I would have been disappointed not to have visited. What a surprise awaits you inside the paintings and frescoes are so different to the typical Orthodox style it really is stunning. The views from the citadel are spectacular.

Dating to the 12th century, this strategic fortress is one of two highly fortified hills (Trapezitza being the other) that protected Bulgarian rulers living on the site in the tsar’s palace.
Tsarevets is a medieval stronghold located on a hill with the same name in Veliko Tarnovo. If you are going there on the summer..bring a hat its quite hot when its sunny. The Sound and Light audiovisual show is an attraction carried out in the evening that uses three lasers, variegated lights, dramatic music and church bells to tell the story of the fall of Tarnovo to the Ottomans, as well as other key moments of the history of Bulgaria. It was free on every Saturday of the week and it was a great experience.

We visited the Church of the Nativity on a Viking River Cruise excursion. The local church guide gave an excellent overview of each part of the church and meaning of all the frescos. No pictures are allowed inside.

The Monument is like the typical communist Monument, simply wanting to display grandeur. But you get perfect views over the city! I bet in the summertime it is even better as you could sit on some steps, having like a quick picnic. Must see place in Veliko.

This delightful church is a short drive from the old Bulgarian capital of Veliko Tărnovo. There are no information boards, but there’s plenty of details given on these reviews about its interesting history. The views are amazing across the valley and the climb up into the bell tower is well worth it.

Necessitating a small hike from the centre of the village the journey is made worthwhile when entering this ancient church to discover it's icons and ancient artifacts.

A wonderful historical cobblestone street with a view towards the old town of Veliko Tarnovo and Asen's Monument. I definitely recommend it for sunset walks and petting stray cats :)
