Heroes' Square

A large square constructed in 1896 for the millennium of the Magyar Conquest of Hungary. The square's Millennial Monument is flanked by the Fine Arts Museum and the Mucsarnok Art Gallery.

We arrived at the destination of the Heroes square only to be a little confused as the square was completely enclosed with high advertising sheets and temporary seating erected around the square as a special celebration day was taking part in that of juvenile horse racing. No seating available to watch the celebration. We eventually found an entrance to gain a sight of the Heroes Sq. It's the largest and most impressive square in Budapest. The Millennium Monument. It is situated at the end of Andrassy Avenue &next to City Park. It is surrounded by two important buildings the Museum of Fine Arts & Kunsthalle ( Hall of Art). The Millennium Monument in the middle of the square was erected to commerate the 1000 yr old history of the Magyars conquest. The Arch Angel Gabriel stands on top of the centre pillar, 36mtrs high holding the Holy Crown & the apostolic Double Cross of Christianity. The Chieftains who led the Magyar tribes to Hungary are featured on the plinth between the colonnades to the left and right. Statutes of the Kings and other important historical figures stand on top of the colonnades on either side of the centre pillars. If you look on the left of the colonnade the last five spaces were reserved for members of the ruling Hamburg family dynasty. The Hamburg Emperors were replaced with Hungarian Freedom fighters when the Monument was rebuilt after WW11. At the front of the Millennium Monument is a large stone Cenotaph surrounded by an ornamental Chain. The Cenotaph is dedicated "To the Memory of the Heroes who gave their lives for the freedom of the people & the National Independence". To get to Heroes Sq take the metro M1 (Millennium metro) to Hosok Tere station. It's worth a visit to the square both during the day and night, then walk along Andrassy Ave to window shop or sit and have a quiet drink and watch the world go by or stroll over to City Park where the winter skating takes place

Anonymus Szobor (Anonymous' Statue)

Reviewed By ElaineAndGreg - Chesterland, United States

The Greeks had Thucidydes and Herotodus to chronicle their history. The Hungarians have - an anonymous author - to thank for theirs. The earliest accounts of Hungarian history were in the 12th and 13th centuries. This statue pays tribute to that author and have his face hidden to reflect the fact that we don't know his name. This is a very nice statue that movingly depicts the role of this unknown chronicler. I really wouldn't consider it a separate attraction as it is part of the very nice City park at the north end of Andrassy Ut in Pest. If you want to visit, try to combine it with Hero's Square - impressive in its own right and maybe 200 yards away, the scenic pond, and the architecturally interesting Vajdahunyad Castle. This is a popular statue. When we visited, it was covered non-stop with visitors posing for group photos. You might have to wait if you want to do the same or even longer if you want a shot of the statue by itself.

Located in the middle of the Hősök tere, or Heroe's Square, this is a fantastic Monument. Often yu see buses or groups of walking tourists with a guide taking many photos and attentively listening to the explanations of the 18 statues of this monument. Yes, that many! It has a great column in centre with a Statue which depicts Archangel Gabriel, who holds the Hungarian Holy Crown and the apostolic double cross in his hands. At the base of the column are the statues of the Seven chieftains of the Magyars There are two colonnades with statues. It is a good test to see how much you know of Hungarian Heroes :-) I loved to visit this monument.

Szechenyi Baths and Pool

The palace-like edifice contains a huge thermal pool where people often play chess while immersed in chest-high, and very hot, water.

Reviewed By carolas936 - Marietta, United States

Szechenyi Spa Baths is in Városliget City Park. A splendid Neo-Baroque palace surrounds large outdoor bathing pools filled with hot water from thermal springs. The hot springs have been used for millennia, starting with Roman bath houses, 16th century Turkish baths, and 19-20th century health spas. Ornate Szechenyi Furdo palace (1913, by architect Győző Czigler) contains outdoor and indoor pools, saunas, gyms, changing rooms, cafes, and businesses offering massage therapies, aqua fitness, aerobics, health therapies and facial treatments. I enjoyed relaxing in the warm bubbling springs surrounded by splendid architecture, imaging myself in a bygone era. Szechenyi Baths are open every day from 6am to 10pm, with no entry fee, although most activities have various fees.

Statue of Grof Karolyi Sandor

Reviewed By TheShis - Tel Aviv, Israel

This is a decent statue, located in the Vajdahunyad castle grounds, just next to the palace. Most tourists just take a selfie with it and don't know (nor care) about his life and efforts for Hungary. Having said that, there's no written information anywhere near the statue.
