ATTENTION The Castiglioni Museum will be closed from July 30th to August 30th. We are waiting for you in September, even with the first edition of VARESE ARCHEOFILM, from 6 to 9 September at the Giardini Estensi. A fascinating journey between archeology and ethnology, from desert to savannah, between myth and reality. An unforgettable experience through unique finds.

Good parking. Little coffee shop. Larger restaurant (which we didn't try). Small shop. We saw the temporary Sean Scully exhibition which was thoroughly enjoyable with lots of space in which to display the a huge collection of work. Enjoyed some of rest of collection too. Views onto garden were lovely. Unfortunately raining so unable to enjoy the outside space which looked really special. Worth the visit.

The Sacro Monte of Varese Unesco, is far few kilometers from the city. It consists of the Holy Road and the Sanctuary. The Holy Road with its 14 chapels, rise the mountain up to the little village of Santa Maria del Monte and it ends with the Sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin. The rise is 2 kilometers along on a pebbly path, and every chapel represents one of the Mystery of Jesus’s life. You can find at the mountaintop the Sanctuary, the Cloister of Monache Romite Ambrosiane, The Museo Baroffio e del Santuario, the Casa Museo Lodovico Pogliaghi, the permanent natity scene, and different restaurants, bar, pizzeria, hotels and b&b. Don't miss the Emporio, a Multifunctional shop where visitors can find touristic informations.
We spent a morning hiking part of the trail, in each direction, from the station of the tram. The views were incredible and the little stores were charming. The cathedral/monastery was amazing. We were with all of our adult children and grand children. Everyone enjoyed the spectacular views. It was a cold winter day but the sun was out and the hiking kept us warm. I wish that we could have spent more time there but we had to leave after about three hours.

Bike trail around the lake is perfect for a tranquillo ride around the lake. But, watch out for the bike rental "noleggio bici" near the Lido della Schiranna part of the lake!! I had the worst experience of renting a bike. It is an absolutely scam. The bikes are of a really bad quality. Got a flat tire 2 times! Furthermore, the chain was loose for 3 times. Same happened to my mate with the chain. I had to pay the full amount of money, which was 20 euro for a 5 hour ride with al these problems.. I didnt agree and he called the italian police immediately. I suggest rent a "gimme bike" from the city and cycle to the lake: it is not far. or find another bike shop! Good luck guys:)

The museum opened in 1900 to preserve some of the artistic heritage of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, on the summit of the Sacro Monte of Varese, a Unesco World Heritage site since 2003. Later on the Museum has enriched its heritage thanks to new donations. The most important was the one made by Joseph Baroffio Dall'Aglio who gave the Sanctuary also the money to build the current home. The latest restoration, completed in 2001, widened the exhibition space and enhanced the collections. In eight rooms, including old rooms with rests of frescoes, there are works that tell the history and the art of the Sacro Monte, while the Baroffio picture gallery provides a path among Flemish, Dutch, Lombard, Venetian and Emilian paintings ranging from the 15th to the 18th century. The modern room hosts around sixty works of artists of the 20th century.
