At Christmastime, the entire city of Valkenburg seems to sparkle with festive light. The annual underground Christmas market is a hallmark of the city, lasting from mid-November through December 23. It’s held in the Velvet Caves, a maze of 12th-century passageways that lies beneath the remains of Valkenburg’s hilltop castle. The caves and castle draw visitors year-round. Valkenburg is a biking city. It's a great base for cycling tours and is a two-time stage finish site for the Tour de France.

Mystery House is located in the old cinema of Valkenburg. The Escape Rooms are based on old movies, curses that have been left behind in the old movie theatre. Each room has its own theme, its own story, and ... its own solution. Escape rooms for 3-6 players (60 minutes): - The Lost Flight; based on the story of the first female explorer Amelia Earhart, who mysteriously dissapeared while attempting to make the longest flight across the world. As you enter the station, it seems as if you step back in time. At the platform a nearly 100 years old steam locomotive and its authentic wooden carriages are waiting for you. Smell, watch and enjoy the ambiance of days gone by, when steam trains were used to carry people and goods. Young and old will enjoy themselves in this museum. You can enter and see inside almost every engine or carriage. Feel free to ask the fireman or engine driver to show you inside the locomotive so you can see the fire in the boiler.

Beautiful train ride with at the end a sound and lightshow. The royal family was present by portaits on the wall.

Stichting Kasteel van Valkenburg (Valkenburg Castle Foundation) was founded in 1924 with the objectives of preserving the Velvet Cave and the ruins of Valkenburg Castle (the Netherlands’ only hilltop castle), as they are now, for future generations and keeping both of these national monuments safe and accessible.
It was quite sunny when we visited. There were plenty of information boards put up to read and know about the history behind the various areas in castle ruins which made it quite interesting. In the guided tour for velvet caves, you must wear a jacket. It was COLD down there. The only negative was that they only do Dutch Language tours.

Experience the excitement of the difficult work of the miners. Take a journey through time past the machines which were used to extract coal. Each visit is uniqueOur fourteen guides are all former coal miners with a wealth of experience working underground. Each guide has a unique presentation full of humour and personal anecdotes which make the past come alive. Demonstrations of mining machines add to the mood. These machines work by means of a specially-installed compressed air system, just like they used to use in the mines.Visitors with disabilitiesThe Steenkolenmijn and the Jan Kruysen Gallery are easily accessible to visitors with disabilities and wheelchair users.
This is worth a visit because you will be entertained by real people with real stories. Most of the machinery is real and you get some sense of what it must have been like in the 1960's and 70's with the demonstrations. The Netherlands did mine coal and this museum keeps that fact alive. It gives you a little understanding of what the work must have been like for the brave miners who mined the coal that produced heat, electricity which helped advance living standards.

It is a replica, but, trust me...fantastic! If you are here, go and visit them. Much nicer than all the other caves in Valkenburg.
