How a town undercovered another ancient town. The ruins are in nice shape to show you the outline of the buildings when they were built. Impressive inside this beautiful French town. A great mix of the old and the very old. Worth a visit.

A Roman bridge with a one-arch span, right in the centre of town. Park at the nearby car park (good for photos) to walk over the bridge and explore the area. Then drive over it (unusual for a Roman bridge!) when you're ready to leave. Lots of other Roman sites to visit in the low town, plus a medieval city higher up above the bridge.

In Vaison La Romaine one can easely spend a day or more and it is great to see how the evolved from a Roman city via the mediaval ages towards the nice city it is today. It has a very well preserved Roman amfitheatre and surrounding area with an associated nice museum. It is remarkable to see that the Roman city was to be found in the valley as conditions were rather stable at the time of the Roman empire. One can see that the mediaval remains (which are really beautiful as well) are located on the rocks where it was easier to defend itself agains surrounding ennemies. The modern Vaison then again expanded over the old Roman village in the valley.
