From the Market Square area, you can easily see the large Ferris Wheel. That cape or small peninsula area is known as “Katajanokka.” If it is a nice day, you are rewarded with several interesting sights. Do not miss noticing the famous Presidentinlinna building—painted in bright yellow--is where President Trump and the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin meet in 2018. Presidentinlinna is diagonally across the street from Market Square. Walking right of Uspenski Cathedral is a two storied platform which overlooks a large pool. The views take in the entire harbor area. The Uspenski Cathedral—i.e. the red church—dominates the area. Even if it is closed, there is a beautiful high rock area with rewarding views. On a nice day, people gather to capture the sunset. If you go to the left of Uspenski Cathedral along the northside harbor area you are rewarded in seeing a fleet of “Ice Breakers.” This fleet is docked here for the summer. There are several displays by the fleet which fully explains the history and what they do. Finland is the largest producer of “Ice Breakers.” Along the way is a small bridge filled with “lover-locks” and a restaurant with a large anchor and a very large propeller in front of it. Don’t miss the “Mine Monument,” dedicated to all the people who lost their lives due to mines in the Baltic Sea during WW II. The Cathedral of St Henry is a marvellous Catholic place of worship, just one of a number of fine such in the area. A further outstanding one is St John's Church that has a grand setting. It seats over 2,500 worshipers and has a superb organ that takes advantage of its famous acoustics. The wonderful Design Museum is at home in an exquisite building that is a worthy exhibit itself. It showcases the Finnish genius for designs across a myriad of themes and motifs. Observatory Hill is a grand for strolling amongst the sylvan surrounds. Its centrepiece is the fine Observatory that was designed by the renowned architect Engel. A superb public art piece is to be admired, namely The Shipwrecked Sculpture. Art Nouveau architecture is to be seen. An exemplary example is the delightful Villa Ulrika. Many embassies reside here. For security and political reasons some are well protected with surrounding railings.
