On the Polish border, Usedom is an island that holidaymakers adore. Soft sands and beautiful views of the sea make it a delight for sun-seekers. For the elegant experience, tour its coastal towns; for the rugged view, rent a bike and explore the nature park. (Tip: If you love to shop, cross over into Poland for better prices on just about anything.)

I took this tour whilst on a driving tour of Germany and was interested in the history surrounding Peenemunde. I called Reiner to arrange my tour the day before and he gave me instructions on how to get to the meeting point which was very easily located. I was the only person on the tour so a bonus for me, we set off in his old VW which had a screen that showed where you were in real time and also where buildings etc were back in 1945. We went into the forest where the V2 rockets were tested which is something you cant do on your own due to it being a fenced off and restricted area with some chance of coming across unexploded bombs etc. We also took a look at a soon to be finished museum that the public cant go into yet and it was full of interesting things all connected to the rocket programme and I found it fascinating. Reiner was very knowledgeable of his subject and the whole tour was fascinating from start to finish, Reiner speaks good English and was easy to understand although I can speak some German he was easy to follow. If you are wanting to visit Peenemunde and not just see the power house museum make this a must do on your list. The tour took three hours which just flew by, I rate this as one of the best one to one tours I have done and would highly recommend it.

Firstly, it’s not a German U-Boat but an ex-East German and ex-Russian Juliette class from the 1980s. Fascinating, though, but quite hard to navigate in the cramped interior. How did they get men to sail on the thing? Ticket seller really grumpy!
