Skokloster Castle is Swedens´ most important monument from the Swedish Age of Greatness when Sweden was one of the most powerful countries in Europe. It was built between 1654-1676 for the noble Swedish statesman and military commander Carl Gustaf Wrangel. It is a world class attraction from the Baroque era with some 50 000 objects in the collections. Sigtuna is often mentioned as the oldest city in Sweden with a city plan that goes back at least 1 000 years. You will feel the historic atmosphere when we walk along the main street (Stora Gatan). We will among other things see the old Town Hall on the Town Square, medieval church ruins, Saint Mary´s Church from 1247 and some genuine rune stones. We will walk on the waterfront promenade along lake Mälaren and there will be some time to eat lunch and to do some individual shopping and strolling in the old city center.

Linnaeus studied the different kinds of plants, and what it is used for. He also named each plant so others will know how to take care and use the plant for what it's purpose is for being there. It is walking distance to my Uncles house.

Carl Linnaeus (Carl von Linné, 1707–1778) is one of the world’s best-known scientists. Linnaeus’ was a multi talented scientist that could call himself physician, botanist, geologist, zoologist and philosopher. He travelled, he observed, recorded, tested, analysed and published a large variety of manuscripts on many different topics. He sought a universal classification of all creation, animal, vegetable and mineral. It is called taxonomy: a classification system for the natural world to for the naming of species and order them according to their characteristics and relationships with one another. He spent more than 50 years in Uppsala and we will walk in his footsteps and see and experience some of the things and sights he saw some 300 years ago. Come and see some of the unique legacy he left behind and learn more about him and his contribution to our lives today!

We did the Uppsala tour today. This guide, Magnus, has a great knowledge of the geography and history of the area. As we began the tour he asked if we had any special requests, and he adapted the tour to our wishes. We visited cathedrals, the Uppsala University, and other interesting sites including an outstanding Swedish pastry and coffee shop. Magnus knows his history well, and answered some specific questions I had about Swedish/Finnish relations. We both recommend this tour as among the very best we’ve ever taken.

The only private day trip to Uppsala from Stockholm. Uppsala is the fourth largest city in Sweden. It is famous for having the oldest and most traditional university in the country, founded in 1477. The young feel and student vibe is easy to feel in Uppsala. The city is also known for the Cathedral, it took roughly 150 years to complete and is the largest in Scandinavia. Swedish kings have been coronated here and some even buried. Many important Swedes lived and died in Uppsala, you can visit the tombs of Carl Linneaus (founder of the naming system for plants), Dag Hammarskjold (UN General Secretary) and Anders Celsius (the temperature scale). Take your time and walk around for a nice lunch of your own choosing. You can also shop at the traditional central market and modern Downtown area. You will also visit the Old Uppsala. Uppsala and Sigtuna lie just north of Stockholm and make for a perfect day trip or longer stay. Gothic Uppsala Domkyrka, or Uppsala Cathedral. Inaugurated in 1435, Gothic re-styled in the 19th century, it is a must see/do in Uppsala.Gamla (Old) Uppsala, just north of the city, boasts impressive 6th century burial mounds and in its museum you can learn about the legend of the Svea kings and gory human sacrifices. Another ‘must’ in Uppsala is Carl von Linné, Sweden’s greatest ever scientist and father of modern taxonomy. For the low down on Sigtuna’s history visit Sigtuna Museum for its brilliant exhibitions and displays. For some ancient Viking detective work, pop into the museum or Tourist Office on Stora gatan and ask or a futhark, or key. This will help you unlock the mysteries of the town’s more than 150 rune stones. Careful how you pronounce futhark though. Duration: 6 hours Distance: 70 km out of Stockholm
