Painfully Amazing and totally worthwhile. This is an important historical reminder of the tragedy of the Nazis, a work camp consisting of several tunnels dug into the side of this huge mountain, all apparently quite wide with high ceilings and interconnected. Inside, slave labor from Italy, Jews from various countries, Spaniards and Roma (gypsies) were all subjected to long days with little food and a cold, cold work environment. Inside, the Nazi genius Werner von Braun (who later was "rewarded" by the US and made chief developer of the US space program) had a rocket building factory. In another chamber was a petroleum refinery. Nearby, outside were barracks and a crematorium for workers who didn't survive. Today, the nearby area has been covered with nice suburban style housing with flower-filled backyards where the crematorium and barracks once stood, but were dismantled and erased immediately after the end of WWII. The area inside that's available to visitors is quite limited, but it has a story to tell all of mankind. This location is surprisingly accessible round-trip by local town bus service which runs about every 30 minutes from the train station.

When in Hallstatt it is worth visiting this small museum right in the centre, you can’t really miss its doorway, and see exhibits and facts about Hallstatt and its salt mining etc.
