This North Shore park is home to a spectacular four-level waterfall, scenic overlooks and is ideal for trout fishing.
Went to Gooseberry Falls to see the frozen falls and they were lovely. We then walked down to the Lake and it was even more amazing. Gorgeous in the winter.

Shipwrecks from a mighty 1905 November gale prompted this rugged landmark's construction. Completed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1910, Split Rock Light Station soon became one of Minnesota's best known landmarks. Restored to its 1920s appearance, the light station offers a glimpse of lighthouse life in this remote and spectacular setting. Split Rock Lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark.
We biked the Gitchi-Gami Trail from Gooseberry falls to Split Rock lighthouse. There is a rack that you can lock up your bikes at. It was 9 miles one way. We paid the entry fee and took the little tour. The lighthouse was neat, and it was interesting hearing about the light house keepers that use to live here and survive the winter. We hiked down the steps to get the iconic picture of the light house from below. There are a ton of step and may be difficult for some to make the trek. Neat place.

Castle Danger Brewery is a small production brewery started in Castle Danger, MN, in 2011. In 2014 CDB moved into Two Harbors for a much needed expansion to a larger brewing system, taproom & canning line. Stop by our taproom for a pint or growler fill of some dangerously good ales. Or visit one of the local restaurants or bars from Duluth to Grand Marais and enjoy a Castle Danger tap beer. Cans are available at the local liquor stores.
We've visited Castle Danger Brewing twice now, and both times, we've enjoyed it. Most recently, we ordered in a pizza from a local place and sat and enjoyed it with a seasonal flight.
The atmosphere is family-friendly, which is great since we have a 4-month old. There were probably 3 other babies and a few kids hanging out with their parents while we were there. But it didn't feel at all like a Chuck E. Cheese or anything.
Their Cream Ale is always excellent

This 2,075-acre area with more than 12 miles of hiking paths is the site of the well-known Split Rock Lighthouse.
We camped at the Split Rock Lighthouse campgrounds for a couple of nights in early Sept. The campgrounds are VERY impressive. These sites book up months in advance, but we got lucky on a cancellation.
We stayed in site #2, which is close to the lake. These lake campground sites were perfect. They are very large, very private, and only a hundred yards from the parking lot. Each campsite had a cart for wheeling in camping gear. The sites had level areas for tents, fire-pits, steel storage lockers for food (keeps critters away), and large picnic talbles. The bathrooms and showers were the best I've seen in a while.
The staff at the camp registration area was very helpful, and the camping is quite inexpensive considering the awesome location. One of the best things is being able to walk a short distance to the edge of Lake Superior. The Milky Way is simply incredible from this location. Will definitely camp here again.

Over 200 miles of trails from Duluth, Minn., to Canada.
No reservations needed. Just grab your stuff and go, experience the freedom of the trail. You get a wide variety of experience within each section, from cliff overlooks to pine forests to marshy boardwalks. This is my escape from the city, and I love it every time - have been coming up with friends, family and boyfriend for years. Day hike or backpack, you'll be happy you went :)

This is a pretty light house. You can walk up to the lighthouse for the view. It is also a bed and breakfast so you can't go through the rooms. It doesn't take long to explore so I recommend taking some time out. There is also a great walk along the lake. I recommend stopping.

We had a lovely time walking this unique beach made up of pink stones south of Split Rock Lighthouse. I looked hard, but couldn't find a dark rock anywhere. And this beach "sings". When the waves come in and disturb the rocks, they make a clinking sound as they re-settle before the next wave. Surf was light when we were there, but you could still hear it faintly. Bigger waves would be interesting.

Viewing point from the Superior Hiking Trail.
There seems to be some confusion as to the name of this place: not sure if it's Hellacious Overlook or Palisade Head. The place we went to looked just like the photos others have posted. Breathtaking views!
We were there over MEA weekend. It was chilly but bright and sunny. There were some college age kids rock climbing - fun to watch. Take your camera, you'll love this place and can see far from the top.

Museum packed with pictures, information and artifacts of the birth and growth of the area. Exhibits all were well organized. Spent more time here than planned to since it was so interesting. Very reasonable admission for the knowledge they conveyed. Gift shop was small but well appointed as well. Not obvious on the drive through town but well worth seeking out if interested in learning and seeing history

Don't overlook this little-known "beach" 15 miles from Duluth. It's not the best place for hunting agates, but is an ideal way to get up close and personal with the big lake, likely without many/any other people around. Amazing to see the lake this way; make this your first stop as you start your North Shore adventure.
