All of the bays around this area are breath taking. We are kiwis but felt as if we had gone overseas. Found a perfect freedom camping site at Woolley Bay on Christmas Day. All sites are clearly marked and so well organised by local council. Great options for calm waters and surf beaches all within a short drive.

I was apprehensive about walking to the lighthouse having read reviews that told of how sections of the path were difficult, as I have some agility issues. Of course you have to attempt the walk as close to low tide as possible which we did. There are lots of steps down to the beach joining the island to the mainland. Then there was a steep climb up to the lighthouse. I took two walking poles and had on trail running shoes which have a good grip. The paths were very dry when we walked the track so this also helped. The view from the lighthouse was truly amazing and well worth all the effort. You can see across to the Poor Knights and beyond, and to the bays below the headland.

This is a great surfer beach for beginners and experienced alike. We always have an awesome time here. Can get busy when the surfs up on a nice day but plenty of parking and toilets make it a great beach.

This is a very pleasant walk mostly thru hilly forestry land. There are no road signs for the Waitoi Road entrance but it's easy enough to find. Waitoi Road is unsealed towards the walk entrance.

Best fish'n'chips on the coast - crispy, no grease, lightly cooked. You pay more than at a straight chip shop obviously, but I swear the fish'n'chips here are better than in most restaurants I've been to. Superb spot outside on the marina when the suns out (it always shines in Tutukaka!) so you can have a beer, great fish'n'chips and watch the stingrays swim by. It's a regular spot for us. If you're local, I'd say join the club - not expensive for a year's social membership and then you also get the cheapest pub on the coast - membership pays for itself. We're not even into fishing yet we love the fishing club. Good place for locals and visitors alike.
