The Silk Road tour of Kazakhstan covers several oldest historical cities – Otrar, Turkestan and Shymkent. The tour lasts for 2 days. First of all you will learn everything about the Silk Road heritage of South Kazakhstan . The highlight of the trip is an ancient-fortress city of Sauran. The city peacefully stands in the middle of the steppe. Time had completely ruined the city. As a result people started to reconstruct it. For this reason serious excavation works are taking place there. The Great Silk Road played a major role in the development of economic and cultural relations. It covered population of Asia Minor, Central Asia, the Caucasus and China. It served as a corridor for technological, cultural and religious exchange. In 2003 UNESCO has included Mausoleum of Khodja Ahmed Yasawi to the list of the World cultural Heritage. Do you want to learn more about this mausoleum?

I stayed in Astana for several days for business, and had a couple of off days, so I asked locals what to do and I was recommended to go to Borovoe. You could do a one-day trip from Astana or spend a weekend, but it was October, and most attractions are closed, and not many people at the hotels or nearby towns, so I don't see a point of staying for the weekend. You could go by joining a tour (what I found on the internet cost like $250 with everything included), or hiring a car (which is what I did, asking a local friend to find somebody. I paid like $150 for the whole day), or taking a train (I heard it's not the best option if you are time constrained, as you have to go to the station, and the train is slow, and you need to find means of transportation from the nearby station). With a car, it took 2.5 hours to get there. I left at 8:30, arrived there at 11:00, stayed there till 5:30, and came back at 8:00. It was a great one-day trip. Even if it was already off-season, the view from the top of a mountain was breathtaking, and we could rent a boat and get to the rock in the middle of the lake, and we also went to a historical site where Khan was chosen (you could buy souvenirs from one of many shops there or take picture with an eagle there). It is called Kazakh's Switzerland. It's not really Switzerland, but Astana is surrounded by steppe, and this is the closest place from Asta where you can enjoy nature. If you go in summer, there are a lot of activities available (boat, swimming, climbing various mountains, checking out restaurants at the village and the hotels), so you can definitely stay for a weekend. I think the best way to describe the place is to see pictures. I post some.
During this tour you'll get all the necessary information about Mausoleum itself, history of religious Sufi orders in Central Asia, history of Turkestan city and history of South Kazakhstan. I would like to give to the guests an in-depth knowledge of our national culture and its spirituality; ancient and recent. I would like to bring, not only the local point-of-view to the discussion, but also give life to facts, legends and stories that have come down through the ages.

Shymkent is situated on a junction connecting Tashkent with Kazakhstan. Southern Kazakhstan’s Sufi heritage consists of the mausoleum of Yasawi towering out above Turkistan. Numerous other Sufi mausoleums dot the desert. Visit is not completed without seeing the ruins of Otrar and Sauran. Taraz and Zhambyl (Jambyl) oblast, medieval mausoleums, and parks sheltering tulips, birds, mountains and nomads hunting with Eagles in nearby town of Merki (Merke). Kazakhstan is a country the size of Europe - mountain and steppe, barely touched by modern civilization and whose inhabitants are mostly farmers. Its falconers continue the Central Asian tradition of flying golden eagles at hare for food and at fox for furs. During the Soviet period, many Kazakhs fled to Mongolia, bringing with them their tradition of hunting with eagles. Although, the Kazakh government has made efforts to lure the practitioners of these Kazakh traditions back to Kazakhstan, most Kazakhs have remained in Mongolia.

The palace is nicely maintained but a little underwhelming. As long as you are walking the old city it’s not the worst idea to take a look but keep your expectations in check.
Kazakh national games took a great and important role in the life of the Kazakh people. It is known that they put people in good spirits, gave strength, agility and endurance. Most of these games have a competitive nature. Kokpar. Two groups of riders take a part in this game. There was a goat carcass (kokpar) at a distance of 50-60 steps from competitors. Who first picks the carcass up from the ground, the other horsemen had to take it. This struggle between the players continued until the evening. If two groups participate in kopkar, the winner is the team whose player reaches the finish line first. In this competition, horsemen demonstrated agility, strength, accuracy, ability to stay in the saddle.

Our guide Gulmira was great. She had the experience and personal touch. The hike around Almaty lake was fantastic. Our driver drove safely through the mountains. The views were incredible. Lots of snow and high mountains. We stopped every so often to view the lovely waterfalls on the way back. We also paid a small extra for the additional falcon show which was great. It was a fun day and a must do in Almaty. Well worth it.

According to the researchers, the territory of modern Kazakhstan is the center of origin and spread of the tulip. Because of the 64-known species of Central Asian tulips in Kazakhstan, there are 34 species (as nowhere!). They cover the whole territory of the republic with a wonderful carpet every spring. And this, without exaggeration - the largest flower bed on Earth! During this tour we will try to show you as many kinds of tulips as possible.
