Mayan ruins tower over the sea in Tulum. The formerly walled city was one of the last to be built by the Mayans, and its archaeological sites are incredibly well preserved. Take a break from the beach to visit El Castillo, the Temple of the Frescoes, and the Temple of the Descending God. Explore an underground river under a canopy of stalactites in the sacred caverns of LabnaHa Eco Park, or dive into Cenote Dos Ojos to snorkel inside of caves in the middle of a forest.

Sip on locally inspired, signature cocktails, shaken, stirred and muddled by our talented team of Cantinero’s. Lounge on bean bags and listen to the toe tapping smooth grooves and world beats that Mezzanine is famous for. Watch the action on Tulum’s vast white sand beach under billowing shade sails from the privacy of the expansive patio or secluded sundeck. Get a bit silly enjoying the 2x1 afternoon margarita specials. Each Thursday night Mezzanine is transformed into 1940's Cuba with live band playing Cuban Rhythms on the deck and Cuban dance show... Classic Rums and Cigars are the order of the night.
We celebrated our 1-year anniversary in Tulum September 9th and decided to have breakfast at Mezzanine since we'd read how beautiful it was. The restaurant itself is amazing- beachfront in the "hotel zone" Mezzanine is situated upon a hill overlooking an incredible view of the ocean. We were immediately greeted very cheerfully by all of the staff there as we walked across the outside patio, and we'd gotten there super early so the host happily informed us we could sit wherever we'd like. We chose a table perfectly situated right above the beach giving us a completely unobstructed view of the ocean and sugar-white sand. I cannot say enough about our delightful waiter Alejandro who was at our table almost immediately with a welcoming smile, and wishing us good morning. He quickly returned with menus giving us a few minutes to soak in our beautiful surroundings and soon returned with AMAZING coffee- actually the best we had while in Tulum! He went over the menu items with us, asking if we had any questions, and upon taking our order returned with a platter of delicious freshly baked bread and several toppings- there was a lemongrass and grapefruit chutney, kahlua butter, and a ginger jam which were all delicious, we particularly liked the lemongrass and grapefruit! Mezzanine has a wonderful breakfast menu- Eggs Benedict, Tropical French Toast, Omelets, and also on the menu are several fresh juice smoothies. Some of the selections are called "Morning Packages" which consist of an entree accompanied by a cocktail, juice or coffee. I had "ON THE MEND" with a Bloody Mary, and my entree was a delicious mix of crispy baby potatoes, sausage and chaya (which Alejandro explained is a green- like spinach or kale), topped with whipped black beans, tomato sauce, a little cheese and two perfectly fried eggs. The Bloody Mary was delicious as was my meal, and I especially liked the chaya, which was very crispy and light. I'd certainly love to make some at home and plan to hunt for chaya here in Los Angeles since there are tons of Latin Markets here! The view there is breathtaking, and the whole vibe made for a most relaxing meal. Throughout our breakfast we chatted with Alejandro who was so warm and friendly, asking about our trip, how we liked Tulum, and where we were from (we found out Alejandro is from San Miguel- a beautiful, quaint little town which we Googled and is now on our bucket list!). He also made nice recommendations for shopping and things to do in the area and was very attentive, checking on us every once in a while to refill our coffee and make sure we didn't want for anything. When we told him it was our anniversary he offered to take our picture (which actually came out so nice it's now my Facebook cover) and when we later said we were hesitant to leave he kindly suggested we sit over in the lounge area for a bit which we did happily. He then very politely asked if it was okay if he fed my leftover potatoes to the Iguana who we found sunbathing next to us while having our breakfast. I laughed and said of course, so he proceeded to feed my potatoes to the little iguana who chomped contentedly, and everyone got a kick out of watching. After paying our bill we wandered over to the end of the deck where Alejandro said we could sit and found big, comfy cushions and chairs. We sat there for a while in complete silence with the sun warm on our faces- listening to beautiful music faintly wafting through the restaurant, the clear turquoise-blue waves crashing and birds singing overhead. I looked over at my husband with his eyes closed and seeing the huge grin across his face I smiled too, as I was certain he was basking in the beauty of the moment, and in our good fortune at being right there right then, just as I was.

Tulum is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Not only because of the great beach and richness in biodiversity but as well because of the great eco friendly concept of the place.
