September 8, 2017 Darleen Reid

Tularosa is a village in Otero County, New Mexico, United States. It shares its name with the Tularosa Basin, in which the town is located. To the east, Tularosa is flanked by the western edge of the Sacramento Mountains. The population was 2,864 at the 2000 census. During the 1990s and early 2000s, the town, north of the much larger Alamogordo, experienced moderate growth and construction as a bedroom community, especially in the housing industry. Tularosa is noted for its abundance of cottonwood shade trees and its efforts to preserve the adobe-style architecture of its past.

Three Rivers Petroglyph Site

Thousands of rock drawings left behind by ancient Native Americans can be found scattered throughout the site.

My husband really enjoyed viewing the petroglyphs. This is probably the greatest collection of prehistoric art and you get to explore the site completely on your own. There are sign posts to mark some of the better examples of art. The path to the rest area shelter and back is about 1.25 miles but it often requires leaving the path to scramble over boulders to see some of the art. Across the entrance road, there is a walking path to take you to some early dwellings—not much to see there, but the signage helps you understand what you’re seeing on the ground. You probably need about 2 hours to walk the petroglyph loop and the dwellings path.

Drove up from our campground in Alamogordo, had three wineries on our list. As this was the farthest away, started here. The gal working the tasting room was great! 4 bucks for tasting and that is cancelled if you buy some wine. Well, that was easy... we left there with four bottles of wine, each one only 12 bucks and all really good! This is a family run winery, back a short distance on a smooth dirt road. Try the Billy Blush if they have any left as we may have bought nearly the last bottle! If wineries are on your to do list, don't miss this one. A real gem that shouldn't be passed up.

We stopped in here on our way to the petroglyphs. Interesting and eclectic collection of stuff. Lots of books, new and used, paintings, jewelry, pottery, all kinds of stuff in the gallery and gift shop. We peeked into the museum part, which was locked, and it looked like they had a nice collection of regional artifacts. Very nice person working there. Definitely worth a stop and a look.

This store has beautiful handwoven rugs hanging outside on roadside displays. Inside you'll find a big selection of Suthentic Navajo rugs, Zapotec rugs, copies of both made in India at great prices. They also have an excellent selection of Silver Native American jewelry. The salespeople were super friendly too.

Great place to get flavored pecans, Baked goods, fudge. They take orders for pies for the holidays. Especially the pecan. There is a large commercial refrigerator that has raw pecans both pieces and whole. This is where I buy my pecans for cooking. They are fresh plump pecans. I pressure seal them, freeze, and then take them to Texas for the holidays.
They have a nice gift shop with emphasis on cooking and jewelry. I bought a glass ring here.
There is a sit down restaurant. But I've never eaten there.
Of course, you can fill up the tank too. Room for big rigs to the north of the lot. Vehicles are refueled in front of the store.
Don't be put off because it's a gas station.

We stopped so our kids could get a picture with the huge pistachio. We went in to the store just to have a look and were surprised by the variety and quantity of products in the store. We walked out with bags of pistachios of various flavors, hot sauce, salsa, chipotle sauce, jars of herbs & seasonings, and watermelon twists. We'd definitely stop in again to see what else we missed the first time.
