What to do and see in Tropea, Calabria: The Best Things to do

September 1, 2021 Terina Blouin

If you come across "cipolla di Tropea"-flavored gelato, you might worry that you’ve forgotten your Italian… or are losing your mind. Don’t fret. "Cipolla" does mean onion, and yes, that is indeed onion gelato. The local red onions are so popular that they’ve even made it into dessert. Tropea, like so many towns on the Amalfi Coast, has a gorgeous cliffside setting. Beneath those cliffs, you’ll find beautiful, sandy beaches.

This little gem is well worth the few stairs down to the beach and up to the sanctuary. The church and its terrace are free; For the rooftop terrace and the gardens a little (2 Euros p.p.) admission fee is charged. Very nice views from the terraces and the garden. The city view is best in the late afternoon. Also nice after dusk.

The second half of September, is a great time to visit Tropea. During this time, there is a jazz festival in the old town. Old buildings, small family shops, nice restaurants, narrow streets - all together give a charm to this beautiful city.

Blanca Beach Club Tropea

Reviewed By NYorkmoors - London, United Kingdom

I’ve lunched and dined here, on both occasions successfully. Think pasta with bottarga, spaghetti vongole, tranche of swordfish and other perfect seaside food. Service is efficient and friendly and the prices correct for what is quite an elegant beachside establishment. Some evenings they hold cabarets and special events. Highly recommended.
