The Park is located 5 km ashore from Trois-Pistoles. You will experience a real travel in time. The Island was visited more than 2000 years ago by First Nations coming there for trading. Then the Basques came there as early as 1584 to butcher the whale and melt their fat over huge ovens that you still can see today. The Parc naturel et historique de l' île aux Basques is a National historical site of Canada and a Migratory bird refuge. The Société Provancher owns the Island since 1929 and protects this jewel where one can see and touch the remains let behind by the Basque whale hunters. Many migratory bird can be observed depending on seasons. During the 3 hours visit (in French), you will discover the Parc naturel et historique de l’Île aux Basques in its pristine nature.
