What to do and see in Transylvania, Romania: The Best Churches & Cathedrals

November 4, 2021 Renato Branum

Transylvania is a historical region in today's central Romania. Bound on the east and south by its natural borders, the Carpathian mountain range, historical Transylvania extended westward to the Apuseni Mountains. The term sometimes encompasses not only Transylvania proper, but also the historical regions of Crișana and Maramureș, and occasionally the Romanian part of Banat.

Timisoara Orthodox Cathedral

Reviewed By manderjones - England, United Kingdom

It would be a shame to make a visit to Timişoara without stopping by the the most impressive construction in town - Metropolitan Church. At first glance you could easily be beguiled into thinking it's older than it actually is. In fact, it was only completed two years into the Second World War in Moldovian style. There are prominent features of Byzantine architecture and the inside exudes sheer opulence. Besides marking the central point in town, its chimes reverberate around the city. The cathedral is built upon 5,000 oak supports and can house the same number of people. Inside display relics and many religious artifacts.

Barsana Monastery

Reviewed By Tiberiu_Baranyi - Timisoara, Romania

Near the village of Barsana you will find this monastery ... a place of serenity and prayer open for visitors ... a place that somehow has a positive vibe to it. Overall an excellent place to visit , free for visiting and with free parking .... go visiting on a weekday , during the weekend there is a crowd gathering - some for the service , some just to see this place. Remember , tread lightly you are on holy grounds - so regardless if you are religious or not it is very interesting to see. For those of you interested in wood carving, architecture and arts in general for sure it is worth seeing. Historical values is almost nonexistent since is a fairly newly established monastery ... however it is definitely a must see when you are in the area. Of Course there are souvenir and religious items shops - since visiting is free of charge this a source of income - but also donations are welcome. If you are in the area, definitely stop here - it is a place of tranquility and serenity ...

Catedrala Reintregirii Neamului (Coronation Cathedral)

Reviewed By wendyanddavid536 - Solihull, United Kingdom

Completed in 1922 for the coronation of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie after the unification of Romania in 1918. In plan it is based on a Greek cross with multiple domes topped with large decorated crosses. The inside walls, as in most Orthodox churches, are highly decorated with Biblical scenes, saints, martyrs, angels, Mary and Jesus. There are numerous lovely icons around the church and a huge iconostasis containing all of the usual icons. A truly wonderful place to visit.
