Airavatesvara Temple is a UNESCO world heritage site along with other Chola temples built between 10th to 12th century AD. Its unlike the Brihadeshwara and Gangaikonda Cholapuram temples is a smaller in size and wonderful work of art and architecture. It has lot of exquisite carving and was built associating the concept of Nitya Vinoda which means perpetual entertainment The city of Gangaikondacholapuram was probably founded by Rajendra chola before his 17th year. Most of the Chola kings who succeeded Rajendra were crowned here. The Vimana with its recessed corners and upward movement presents a striking contrast to the straight-sided pyramidal tower of Thanjavur but with octagon shape of Dravidian architecture. As it rises to a height of 182 feet (55 m) and is shorter than the Thanjavur tower with larger plinth, it is often described as the feminine counterpart of the Thanjavur temple.

Went to the Cathedral and joined Tamil congregation for Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Service was cast to screens as church full. Flashing bright lights at side altars. It was build for the French inhabitants in the past. Toilets outside were poor. They closed early and were in complete darkness. Also went to Our Lady of Angels, a lovely church, bright and welcoming, and has a image of St Teresa of Calcutta outside. Also visited the Temple for a short visit as it was closing its doors for the afternoon.

The Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are called the Navagraha (9 “Grahas”). Planets are believed to influence the horoscope computed based on time of one's birth and subsequently influence the course of life. Each of the planets are believed to move from a star to another during a predefined period and thus sway over an individual's fortunes. The Navagrahas, as per Hindu customs, are believed to provide both good and bad effects for any individual and the bad effects are mitigated by prayers.

Exclusions: Food and drinks, Special Darshan Fees (wherever it's necessary)
Visiting the holiest of places, we were inspired by the devotion shown by its worshippers. Least of all, the architecture and history gave us an insight into the past and taught us to appreciate the present.

Admire the most iconic landmarks of Thanjavur on this local sightseeing tour, Raja Rajendra Chola conquered the Pandyas and the eastern Chalukyas in about the middle of the 10th century and founded a mighty kingdom with Thanjavur as his capital. He and his successors in the dynasty enriched the places with grand temples and places.

This trip or tour, is basically a pick and drop from the hotel to Auroville and back. No guide and no written matter too. It is cheaper to hire a taxi and go to Auroville. I felt cheated. The driver was good and courteous, and drove well, but could barely speak English or Hindi. Best to avoid this trip.

Thanks Vijay for a wonderful day trip on a Royal Enfield. Due to my time constraints we had to modify the plan, but I still managed to have a great experience on the road. Winding in and out of Kanchipuram, the silk Saree capital, we were greeted by groups of wedding parties in their vivid red and glistening gold sarees, illuminating the streetscape. There is nothing like exploring India on an Enfield, it is totally immersive, you are part of the action, see it, hear it, smell it, taste it, while feeling the thumping Enfield engine propel you along for more. Then into the sanctuary of the temple with informative descriptions by Vijay of the stories, legends and history of this very holy site. Thanks for a great day! James

I came to chennai on work and was alone on a weekend. So decided to book a day trip to Pondicherry through Five senses tours as their reviews were very good. It was a lovely day and the tour company was both professional and friendly. Our gudie balaji was very informative as he was born and brought up there. He also ensured we got a very good feel for the French heritage. He took us to magnificent churches and also took us on a architecture walk along the French quarters. I enjoyed Auroville the most. The tranquility at the dome was absolute. All arrangements by Five senses tours were impeccable. They send a clean and air-conditioned car. The driver was safe and courteous. Out guide Balaji was there to pick us in morning and was with us till the drop back at night . He had also organised simple and delicious lunch. It was a fully paid tour so no hassles and Five senses organised everything so I could just seep in the beauty of Pondicherry!

We are so glad that we took the opportunity to spend the morning with Jagan in his family's village. It provided us with such a different view of India from the usual tourist trail – most interesting to see the insides of houses, people at work, fishing, repairing their roofs, et cetera, and Jagan himself was so clear and open in answering all our questions about the lives of village people. The high spot for us was a visit to the local school and the reactions of 40 delightful and enthusiastic children. This is highly to be recommended, and should be at the top of anyone's programme for a visit to southern India. Temples and palaces are great, but this is quite different.

Jagan, our guide, introduced us to his family who welcomed us warmly and traditionally to their home. Jagan then walked with us around the small village. Some of the highlights were the fish pond, where his friend demonstrated how he caught fish by throwing a net, and the 1000 year old temple, which is crumbling but still used by locals. We travelled by tuk tuk to a local primary school, where the children sang to us and appeared to really enjoy our visit. We also walked through some of the paddy fields along the way. Back at the house, we explored the rambling vegetable garden, and were invited to help with the preparation of a delicious lunch of traditional foods, using local ingredients. We learned how to eat in traditional style, and were pleased to be able to use these new skills at later stages of our trip. A great visit, which we highly recommend.

Highlights • Gothic and French architectural style • Relic of the True Cross • Statue of our Lady of Lourdes
