Gangaikonda Cholapuram

Reviewed By JPHStVincent - Singapore, Singapore

Gangaikondacholampuram is out in the countryside; there is just a small village. I arranged an AC car and driver in Kumbakonam. The drive took about 45 minutes one way (a little longer on the way back as we stopped for tea) and the charge was 1,250 rupees. And was that time and money well spent! The temple is magnificent, covered in fantastic statues and carvings both inside and out, with smaller shrines and a remarkable statue in the well maintained gardens. A true testament to the glory of the Chola dynasty. No entrance charge, but a small donation for taking care of shoes is expected.

One of the most important temple for Lord Murugan in Tamil Nadu. The temple is located in the outskirts of Kumbakonam. You need to climb quiet a few steps to reach this temple. It is easily about 50 feet from the road level. Be ready to climb the steps to have darshan of the deity. If elders are going to accompany you be ready to spare enough time for them to climb the stairs if they can. You get very nice prasadams in the counter there which you can purchase.

The vinayagar idol here is believed to be made from the amirtham which was the result of the churning of the milk ocean where lord Vishnu was Seen to be residing ..
