Worth the stop. Great place to take pictures of the bridge and of the river. Free parking near the bridge also. This bridge is closed to traffic, pedestrian or bicycle only. There is also a really neat closed denim factory by it. Neat bit of history for bridge and building.

Short hike up to a beautiful view of the lake and downtown in the distance. Nice nooks and crannys for privacy. Clear skies up high make you feel like 'King of the World' ????

This is an amazing structural architectural design. You can spend hours marveling at this structure.

Everyone who watches Texas Country Reporter (as we regularly do) will enjoy walking across the bridge used for the show's opening. We approved from the north of San Saba and had to drive a few miles on a caliche road in order to reach the bridge, but the road was not bad at all (we were expecting lots of loose gravel, but that was not the case). Because of structural issues, the bridge has been closed to traffic but it is open for walking (we were there in mid-December). If you are near Gatesville or San Saba, it is worth the drive to experience this 1939 suspension bridge, one of the last of its kind in Texas.

The Waco Suspension Bridge is the oldest Suspension Bridge still standing in Texas. Built it 1870, it was the first bridge across the Brazos River. This stunning bridge was built with cables supplied from John Roebling's firm, which built the Brooklyn Bridge. Today, it is a pedestrian-only bridge and is a wonderful place to watch the river roll by.
We stumbled across this while in Waco to visit Magnolia Market and Table and were glad we did! It was neat to see something so old (1870) and there is a nice park beside it with some neat large statues of cowboys and longhorns (Coming up the Texas Chisholm Trail)! Would definitely recommend a visit if you are in town!

There is a roadside park off of the highway before you reach the bridge that gives you a spectacular view of the bridge. Plenty of covered picnic tables to enjoy a picnic lunch with a wonderful view. Worth the stop!

We were on the Painted Churches tour headed to Dubina and our Chamber Docent, Nina, gave us some history of this bridge before approaching and while driving over (and enjoying) the bridge. It's an historic truss-style bridge from the 1880's. We were so pleased that the folks around Schulenburg cared enough to preserve this piece of history.
