Wetland Education Center

This is a very small (3 1/2 acres) site maintained by the University of Texas Marine Science Institute across the street (park in the lot by the Institute on the other side of the street’. This is built in marsh area and has several short boardwalks accompanied with nice natural landscaping. There are several informative signs that are very helpful explaining oyster beds and the ecological significance of marshes. It is an outstanding location for bird watching. Just a very short walk to the jetty by the ship channel.

We are a family friendly fishing pier. We offer rod rentals, bait, cold drinks, sno cones, wine, cold beer, margaritas, snacks, pizza, hot dogs, gifts, and lots of fun. In addition to having a pier for fishing, we also have an observation deck for those who dont want to fish, but want to sit above the water and enjoy the cool breeze of the Gulf of Mexico.

I took my kiddos here a few times throughout the week. We loved just being able to purchase some snacks and watch fishing and the sunset from the top deck. It was great! Highly recommend!

We’re visiting SPI for our honeymoon and decided to go check out the fishing pier. It’s free to walk and view. Wasn’t busy or crowded, was very clean. Quite a few people were fishing and we even seen a few dolphins come up close. Definitely recommend taking a walk down this pier. ♥️

Fishing pier is great, make sure you have a drop net and some sturdy rods and tackle. I’ve fished there every time we go and never fail to catch something, from sharks to sand trout. Caught a 32” bull red last time.
