Saint Anthony Cathedral Basilica

Reviewed By worldtravelsavy - Houston, United States

Free parking shaded by old trees. Free admission, donations appreciated. Super nice lady at the check in office where you need to register, then she lets you in. Wonderful stained glass windows. Beautiful baptismal with endless water feature into the cross laden pool below that makes a very peaceful bubbling sound. Gorgeous organ pipes above the entrance. This has a very European feel to it like most catholic churches where I grew up in Germany. Lots of gilding and beautiful marble floors. 2 beautiful side alters and a spectacular domed ceiling. Highly recommend you go see this place for yourself.

Sam Houston Park

Park containing seven historic homes, an oasis of antiquity in the heart of the bustling modern city.

It's really staggering to see the difference between the original houses of Houston and the new gigantic skyscrapers. This park does a good job of presenting some of the original housing through the years.

Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens

Bayou Bend is the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's house museum for American decorative arts and paintings. Displayed in the former home of Houston civic leader and philanthropist Ima Hogg (1882-1975), the collection is one of the finest showcases of American furnishings, silver, ceramics, and paintings in the world. The house is situated on 14 acres of organically maintained gardens in Houston's historic River Oaks neighborhood.

Comparing the Bayou Bend American furniture rooms to DuPont's Winterthur Museum is unfair, as they both have excellent collections of American furnihings but Bayou Bend has a less comprehensive view of 18th and 19th century furnishings than Winterthur. It is still high on my list of National "must see" Museums. Its grounds are enchanting and the Museum feels more like a visit to a wealthy friend's home (a la Marjorie Merriweather Post's Hillwood in Washington, DC) than to a major Museum of American furniture (Winterthur in Delaware)

Restored to its turn of the century splendor, the 28,000 square-foot, four-story structure was completed in 1895. Today, our guests visit 20 rooms on a self-guided tour that depicts the home life of a powerful Texas family. The Moodys established one of the great American financial empires. Based on cotton, it grew to include banking, ranching, insurance and hotels. The mansion is one of the finest places to visit, a trip back in time. Touring the museum should definitely be on the top on the list for things to do on Historic Galveston Island. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gift shop (located at the back of the property along with some off-street parking) with credit or debit (no cash). We received an excellent explanation of what to expect during the tour from the lady at the gift shop who handed us the audio devices (sealed in plastic bags). There were three audio choices at each of the stations in each of the rooms open for tours on the first and second floors (regular information, personal diary snippets, and regular information in Spanish). There is also a short introductory video and three old cars to see in the garage. The home contains period furnishing and family photographs, and the audio tour is well done. We were able to see everything in 90 minutes.

George Ranch Historical Park

Welcome to the Ranch! Founded in 1824, the George Ranch Historical Park brings Texas and Fort Bend County history to life through interactive school programming, group tours, special events and Saturday programs for the general public.

Take a half day and walk through four generations of Texas History, from the dog run cabin to the fanciest of 1900 mansions, with docents ready to act out the lives of those who had come before. Be sure to sign up for the cowboy lunch, served fresh from the frying pan to your plate (peach cobbler!). Watch the cowboys herd the longhorn steers; great for families. If you have an extra hour, drive the few miles down to Brazos Bend State Park and see the alligators roaming wild.
