October 26, 2021 Joeann Galban

Taunton /ˈtɔːntən/ is a large regional town in Somerset, England. The town currently peaks at a population of 69,570 as of 2018. The town itself has over 1,000 years of religious and military history, including a monastery dating back to the 10th century and Taunton Castle, which has origins in the Anglo Saxon period and was later the site of a priory. The Normans then built a stone structured castle, which belonged to the Bishops of Winchester. The current heavily reconstructed buildings are the inner ward, which now houses the Museum of Somerset and the Somerset Military Museum.

Steve and Sally were fantastic hosts during our family alpaca walking experience today (25 August 2020). We have spent the morning with all the alpacas and my girls loved it saying “it was the best experience ever!” Would highly recommend a visit to see the alpacas. The refreshments afterwards and homemade cakes capped off a perfect morning. It’s a thumbs up and five stars from us! ????????????????????.

St Mary Magdelene Church

Reviewed By cherriesfan_9 - Cheltenham, United Kingdom

Superb red sandstone church dating (in parts) from the early 1300's and that built on top of a church 200 years older still. A little away from the main hustle and bustle of this likeable Somerset town, the church is now crammed in by the medieval road plan, (or lack of), which confines views of the very impressive church tower - and is itself is a replica from the 1850's - A piece of Victorian restoration that has been carefully crafted. However, being also sandstone, the deterioration of some of the statues is plainly seen (acid rain). The "angel" etchings on the glass doors, as you enter, are beautiful - really eye catching, and only give a small clue as to the treasures inside of this lovely well maintained church. Beautiful ceilings and tasteful Victorian etched panels stand out. This is a well supported church that obviously works hard to attract visitors and retain local interest - so worth sparing time to see, and to reflect in.

A great area to play with family and children, there is a good play park for children as well. Have a coffee and cake at the weir cafe. Picnic by the river . Walks along the river, dog friendly space.

Taunton Castle

Reviewed By Coastal761708 - Walt Disney World, United States

This was my first visit to Taunton - indeed to Somerset - and I found the castle and museum a mine of historical information, very well set out and easy to engage with. Nice gift shop, clean toilets, friendly and informative staff. Its free to visit but I would have not been disappointed with a £5-8 charge.
