The Dar es Salaam Centre for Architectural Heritage (DARCH) is the best place to go to get information about the history of the city, the buildings, and the city's urban planning. We walked in off of the street and the two people working were so nice and prepared to give us a free tour. This was one of the best tours of the city that we had been on. The young man showing us around was very knowledgeable and helpful! He would tell us the history of something and walk away and give us time to take pictures and read things on our own. Once we were done, he would walk up to us and then we would take us to another area of the building. I liked that he did this and did not rush us through the center or pressured us to hurry up. I would recommend anyone staying in Dar es Salaam to visit DARCH to learn about the history of the city, and the attempts to preserve the original buildings. There is a lot new construction (new hotels and apartment buildings) going on in the area that is changing the original landscape of the area.

Fascinating museum and great to learn the story behind the Tanzanzite gemstone. I was greeted by Tabitha and she did a great job throughout the visit. I appreciated the informative and short documentary and then the replica of mine shaft and then seeing the actual raw stones, learning about the stone quality and then the jewelry prices. Overall the prices were high but was able to find some reasonable pieces. Later in the airport as I was looking in the other shops, the prices were the same, so I am glad I got my pieces here. I felt no pressure to buy anything which is always positive. Instead, it was very friendly and cordial. They even offered some cookies and coffee. Glad that I was able to finally visit as the Museum was closed on my initial day in Arusha due to the Election holiday.

We start more than three year ago, a fine art photo gallery in the centre of Stone Town in the former tourist shop of Zakia. The idea to initiate The Beautiful Eyes as a place to present art photography started in May 2008 when three photographers visited Zanzibar for a week of photography. They missed a place to talk, present and even to buy photography. In September 2008 Hans Agterdenbos, one of the three, came back to stone town and started investigations to open a gallery. He met Zakia Abdullah they married in march 2009 and they founded The Beautiful Eyes place to talk about photography, find inspiration and maybe good ideas. Up to the present time ±4500 visitors found the way into there gallery. Some take an original photograph home, others attend one of the workshops the Photowalk© the Shambawalk© the Pembasafari. Most caught some inspiration and all of them left the gallery with a good feeling and positive words

The women of Hurumzi Henna Art Gallery transform traditional henna body arts into paintings and prints . Using a centuries old tradition of adorning women's hands and feet for celebrations such as weddings and festivals, the artists translate the patterns of the body art onto canvas creating a new and soon to be iconic art style through their elaborate paintings.
Cute art gallery of hand made henna paintings in the heart of stone town. Feel free to bargain and pick up some really great local art!
