Saadani is where the beach meets the bush. The only wildlife sanctuary in East Africa to boast for an Indian Ocean beachfront, it sounds too far fetched to be true – an epic safari adventure filled with scenic Savannah, verdant bush lands married with calm beaches absent from tourists. This description may sound like the stuff of dreams, but here in Tanzania’s Saadani National Park, it is the reality. Yet it is also the one place where those idle hours of sunbathing might be interrupted by an elephant strolling past, or a lion coming to drink at the nearby waterhole!

We received a written email stating that we would get picked up at the hotel and dropped off at the Dar es Salaam airport at the end of the safari. This transportation was to be included in the overall price. Also, we were to have all meals and activities included in the safari price, and the package was to include a safari hat and t-shirt. Well, the night before, we discovered that only one meal per day would be covered. We shrugged and went ahead anyway. At the end, the guide (Baracka Kimambo) said when we got to the airport that we would have to pay $10 each for a snake park we visited, $20 each for a lunch we had in Mikumi Park, and an incredible $50 because we were brought back to the airport instead of the original hotel in Dar es Salaam (not that far from the originating hotel). Sincere there were seven us in the group, this was a substantial amount of money! We felt as though we were being swindled by a guide whom we had gotten to know and like over the past three days. All this just minutes after we had given him a $210 cash tip! Not a good feeling. Not knowing what to do, we paid the extra money. Then, at the airport, we decided to call the director (Rodgers Bajungu), who was very nice and was apologetic. He directed Baracka to return to the airport and give us the money back, which he did. For some reason, we let him keep the tip. Unpleasant ending to an otherwise good trip.Oh, and by the way, we never got the promised hat and t-shirt.....

Our experience in Tanga and with the Tanga Cultural Tourism Enterprise (CTE) was incredible. Imani, our tour guide, was so welcoming when we arrived. He gave us a brief history of the area and highlighted the different programs and tours offered in the area. The first day we were taken on a walking tour of the city. Not only is it a beautiful city that lies next to the Indian ocean, everyone is so friendly and the streets aren't crazy busy, giving the town a relaxed feel. We tried out some coconut wine at the local bar and then ended the tour at Imani's house, where we were lucky enough to share a meal with him and his family. The next day, we went on a bike tour to the Amboni Caves and the Sulphur Hot Springs. Because Tanga is relatively flat, the bike ride was super relaxing, allowing us to take in the sights and city. The Amboni Caves are absolutely stunning and the tour throughout the cave was filled with humour and information about the caves. The next part of the bike ride was through scenic fields, ending at the vibrant blueish green sulphur spring. Through all of this, Imani taught us so much about each attraction as well as the surrounding area. We went back to Imani's families house for lunch, where we went through the entire process of making pilau. This was definitely a highlight for me. It's a lot of work but the end result is delicious! After lunch, we headed to the museum, where we learned about Tanga's history and the German occupations of the area. We ended the evening off with a bike ride down by the ocean. Tanga is a place that should absolutely be on anyone's list when coming to Tanzania. Imani and the Tanga CTE were incredible and we can't thank them enough for our incredible experience in Tanga.

The Mkomazi National Park is a spectacular wilderness. Within sight to the northwest is Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest summit. To the south, the Pare and Usambara Mountains form a dramatic backdrop and, to the north, Kenya’s vast Tsavo National Park shares a border with Mkomazi, making common ground for migratory herds of elephant, oryx and zebra during the wet season. Together with Tsavo, it forms one of the largest and most important protected ecosystems on earth A tour to Mkomazi can be combined with other adventures like Marangu waterfalls, Mt Kilimanjaro climbing, Kikuletwa Hot Springs, Lake Duluti, Momela National Park and Lake Duluti

Amboni, have been associated with fascinating stories of a deity residing in the caves where traditional rites are still continuing to be held up to the present time. Ethnic groups such as the Segeju, Sambaa, Bondei and Digo who lived near the caves used it for prayers. There are chambers treated as sacred chambers for worshipping some spirits. One of them is called “Mzimu wa Mabuvu”. Some believe that there is a powerful deity which can alleviate their sickness, sufferings or increase their fertility. This is where Osale Otanga, the person who gave colonialists a hard time lived. The caverns are associated with dazzling stories. One cavern was allegedly used as a hideout by a famous Pre-Uhuru pair of Robin Hoods in the 1950s Mau Mau insurrection. The cave attracts tourist as well as students for their geography lessons.

The Usambara Mountains. Are home to an unspoiled tropical forest that is rare in East Africa and of great ecological interest. The valuable ecology of the Usambara is seeking increasing protection by conservation organizations and some donor countries like Norway. The tropical forests are home to endemic bird species including the Naduk eagle owl (Bubo vosseleri), the Usambara Akalat (Sheppardia montana), Amani sunbird, green-headed oriole, southern banded snake eagle and the Usambara weaver (Ploceus nicolli). In addition to learning about the conservation needs of this mountain range and doing some spectacular birding, there are ample opportunities for hiking with stunning viewpoints over the forested mountains.
