My husband and I visited Takayama on a rainy day. We were only in Japan for a short time and only in Takayama for 2 days. We decided to hike around Takayama to look at the temples and we stumbled upon Daiouji Temple. We were intrigued by the signs advertising calligraphy lessons for only 1000 yen per person. It was raining (which may have been part of our motivation) and so we decided to give it a shot. The chief priest, Gene, was very congenial and patient. He gives a detailed description of what to do and is very helpful. He will also take photos for you. We took our time doing our five different drawings of the symbols. My favorite part was the peaceful garden in the back of the temple. This was one of our favorite activities in Takayama and I would highly recommend.
