What to do and see in Taipei, Taiwan: The Best Hiking Trails

October 25, 2021 Terina Blouin

You can eat very well—and very cheaply—in Taipei. The restaurants may not look posh, but the quality of the food is superlative. And there’s a huge variety of restaurants—in addition to local Taiwanese specialties, you’ll find regional cuisines from all over China, as well as great Indian, Japanese and even Italian options. Just make sure to leave some room for snacks—street-vendor food here is addictive.

Tiger Mountain Trail

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

Tiger Mountain Trail is a trail (or series of trails) behind the Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC) hear Taipei 101, Taiwan's tallest building. The trail has steps for the weekend hikers. You get a great view of Taipei from the trail. It's near Wuxing Street. You may see some wildlife, mainly birds. The trail is not extraordinarily strenuous, anyone of average fitness should be able to handle it if they take it steadily. It's a good place to get some fresh air.

Yang Ming Shan Qing Tian Gang

Reviewed By maryyeo - Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Qingtiangang is a grassland on part of the Yangmingshan national park. You will like it if: 1. You enjoy the sheer expanse of space and fresh air atop a mountain. 2. You enjoy watching cows graze. 3. Easily accessible by car as the car park is just 100 metres away. Public buses are available too for the budget-conscious. Comparing Qingtiangang and Cingjing Grasslands: 1. Qingtiangang is right inside Taipei city, on Yangmingshan, one of the few national parks in the world that's in a city. Also, there are many other attractions atop this Yangmingshan mountain. Cingjing is somewhat in central Taiwan so much harder (few hours ride or need to take the high speed train and transfers) to get to, be it from Taipei or Tainan airports. The main attraction in Cingjing is just the grassland and Swiss Garden, a manmade garden. 2. Qingtiangang is free compared to Cingjing Grassland. 3. Qingtiangang on Yangmingshan is open even at night so you can visit at night to enjoy the stunning nightview of the Taipei city from the top of a mountain. Cingjing Grassland the attraction closes at 5pm. 4. Cingjing has more animals and activities e.g. pony riding, sheep feeding, etc. Qingtiangang only has brown cows and they are not released to graze when the weather is bad. 5. Cingjing is more quaint and probably has more mountain lodges or 'minsu' and you can enjoy the mountain mist as you walk around the small town at night or in the morning. You can find overnight stays at Yangmingshan too but probably not as quaint as the feeling of staying in a small mountain town like Cingjing, and probably doesn't overlook the grasslands like the one at Cingjing.

Bihu Hiking Trail

The 1,327-meter Bihu Hiking Trail connects Alley 12, Lane 60, Sec. 3 of Neihu Rd. and Lane 131 of Dahu St. It is inhabited by various species of fauna and flora, such as the Taiwan Blue Magpie, Crested Serpent Eagle, Pallas’s squirrel and the Indian Cabbage White butterfly. The favorable weather, water and soil conditions also enable Taiwan Acacia, Large-leaved Nanmu, ferns and shade-tolerant native plants to thrive in Bihu, which was once a coal-mining boom town under the jurisdiction of the Taiwan Provincial Government. To illustrate the progress of regional history and culture, a nostalgically simulated Xinfuben Mine, complete with a mine tunnel, rails and cinder-loaded mining cart was launched (at 1k+000) on the footpath. Bihu Hiking Trail is perfect for weekend recreation as it lies close to Mt. Zhongyong, Mt. Liyu, the Yuanjue Temple Hiking Trail, Yuanjue Waterfall, Dahu Park, and other attractions popular with hikers. With street lighting available along the length, Bihu Hiking Trail is perfect for taking in Taipei’s beautiful nightscape.
