Once one of ancient Greece’s most important cities, today Syracuse (Siracusa in Italian) is a lively town of about 125,000 on Sicily’s southeast coast. The city overflows with amazing remnants from its long history. Romans, Vandals and Normans are but a few of those who ruled here after the Greeks. In Syracuse’s harbor, Ortygia Island (also called Città Vecchia or Old City) is the site of many of the main attractions, including the seventh-century cathedral and the Fountain of Arethusa.

Came here with my husband for our wedding anniversary and we had a lovely experience is Cassa de montabalno. Maria the housekeeper was amazing. Very helpful friendly and when we arrived we had to organise a Covid test. She organised it with the help of Ivana and we were very happy that they helped us. Maria was a source of information and arranged us to go on a day tour on a Montabalno Day Tour with Nunzio the taxi driver. We had a wonderful day. I would highly recommend this b&b to anyone who loves the tv show. Only negative was we missed the season and not many restaurants were open but we didn’t starve. We bought our food in the local shop and ate on the balcony in the evening. Thank you for having us!

Ortygia is the historical and religious centre of Syracuse. Is a small island joined to the mainland by a couple of bridges. When is possible, I like to offers also tastings of typical Sicilian food, like Modica’s chocolate, cheeses and charcuterie, at the Local Market or shops in Ortygia. Is also possible to have lunch together, at a Restaurant or at the Market with Sicilian cheeses, cold cuts, sun dried tomatoes and other traditional food.

We love Noto. This was our second visit however this time we went for the Christmas holidays. The weather was temperate and comfortable and the tourists were at a minimum. Good for us! It is such a charming and manageable town. We elected to stay right in town to minimize car travel and that was the best decision. Great restaurants and of course, Cafe Sicilia for almond granita. Easy side trips to Siracusa, Modica and Ragusa too.

The ticket of the Neapolis Archaeological Park costs 10 euros per person. Free entrance under 18 and every first Sunday of the month. During our guided walking tour of the Neapolis Archaeological Park I’ll show you, in chronological order, the Quarry of Paradise with the famous Ear of Dionysius and the Cave of the Rope-makers, the Greek Theatre, the Altar of Hiero II (the largest in the world) and the Roman Amphitheater.

I will let you discover the history, art, habits and typical Sicilian dishes with the eyes of a local, the perfect mix to appreciate one of the most important Mediterranean cities in the Greek period and beyond. In addition we can add the market tour to taste some of the most delicious sicilian local food.

Grazie Letizia for taking me to all the best food places in Ortigia on this tour. I was grateful Letizia honoured the booking as my private guide as no one else had signed up that day. You will eat a ton of food and just getting to the front of the queue at Caseificio Borderi is worth the cost of the tour alone :) Don’t miss this tour!

We visited Sicily for approx a month in January. We decided not to drive ourselves and used a company called Taormina Transfer. They are extremely flexible and will do as little as transfer you from Catania airport to Taormina or arrange a trip all around Sicily with day tours like they did for us. Always on time and very pleasant. Maria and Massimo were great and nothing was too much trouble. We highly recommend them.
