Jost House Museum

The Jost House is the oldest house in Sydney Nova Scotia, built in 1786. We are open June 1st to October 29th and/or all cruise ship days. During your visit, a guide will give you a personal tour of our 1786 kitchen and the ground floor of the museum. The basement has been restored to the original 18th century kitchen. On the ground floor we have many historical Victorian artifacts in our bedroom, parlour, dining room and store. The upstairs portion of the house, added in 1910, has four different exhibit rooms to browse around in at your leisure. Our Hours in September and October are 10-4 Monday to Saturday but vary on cruise ship days. We are open on Sundays if a cruise ship is in port.

Well worth visiting this house, one of the oldest remaining colonial houses in Sydney. VERY cheap to go in.. and certainly value for money! Very pleasant staff inside dressed in period costume. You could have a guided tour or walk around yourself. Very nicely laid out and although the rooms are small they are crammed full of interesting things to see and many items belonged to the Jost family. The kitchen area was lovely and cool.. boy was it a hot day outside! very informative gentleman gave us the history and description of what went on when the house was occupied and he got us to try and identify several artifacts.. we didn't do too well!! Highly recommend including Jost House in your plans when visiting super friendly and lovely Sydney. the whole town was a treat to visit!

My first visit to this place was just this summer and I'm sad that I didn't discover it sooner! It was an easy peaceful walk and I will definitely be back again.

Beautiful, secluded and well groomed walking trails in the middle of the city. Best time to visit is early fall when then leaves are just starting to change. Very peaceful with the sound if running water throughout.

Cape Breton Regional Library

Reviewed By paige2903 - Sydney, Canada

I went to visit the library last year to look for a book in order to analyze for my thesis paper back in high school. The book is very old and I could not find it anywhere else except for Cape Breton Regional Library. The staffs were welcoming and they greeted me very well. They asked for the name of the book and quickly after that they handed me the book. Also you do not need to pay for anything when you come and borrow the resources. They have a huge amount of resources from the books on display to the books that they kept in the back of the house. They also have 5 to 6 computers that everyone can access to if you do not have a personal one at home. You are welcome to use the computer there. When you sign to borrow a book, they will give the date that you have to return it usually it is about 2 or 3 weeks. The staff will make a phone call with you to remind about returning the book 1 or 2 days before the returning date. You can also ask to prolong the return date through that phone call without having to come to the place. They will normally except to do so unless there is another person borrow it beforehand. Additionally, there is free wifi and a large working space which is very quiet and comfortable for people to read or use their computer to work. The decoration of the library is extremely nice, vintage style and cozy. I really enjoy my visit and I always want to visit it again.

We arrived in Sydney at Cruise Ship and the first thing I saw on the pier was The Big Fiddle; What a musical reception! The Fiddle is 60 feet high and was designed and built by Cyril Hearn. In 2005 The Big Fiddle was placed here as a salute to the folk music and traditions of the Celtic community here in Nova Scotia.

There is an excellent boardwalk along the waterfront which is a must-do if you would like a nice leisurely stroll, or jog if you prefer. We were there when a cruise ship was in port and that was a nice visual. The big fiddle offers a worthwhile photo-op.

Wentworth Park

We visited this park as an extension of our stroll along the waterfront boardwalk and it was so enjoyable. It isn't big so you can walk the loop around the water pond in ~15mins. Check out the pictures that many others have submitted to see all that this little, understated park has to offer.
