After having been to the Europe-Asia border marker and the holy site of Ganina Yama I came to the spectacular rock formation called 'Devil's Town' in Russian. From Ganina Yama it took me 50 minutes by taxi on a dirt road with plenty of water filled potholes to get here, something most taxi drivers in other countries wouldn't have accepted to drive. Once at the parking it is a quite steep hike of about 10 minutes - with no signposts - through a forest full of granite boulders to the 347m asl high ridge with the unusual rocky outcrop. Since in August the area was full of mushrooms I saw quite a few people collecting them. The about 100m long and 20m high rock wall is impressive. It is a phenomenon, which can be found also in other places such as at the 'Greifensteine' in Saxony's Ore Mountains. Geologically it is explained as liquid magma that penetrated into a crack of already existing rocks and solidified to granite, forming a dike. Erosion weathered away the surrounding rocks, leaving the hard volcanic center. Later chemical alterations along intersecting joints formed the 'woolsack' or spheroidal weathering of the granite, which we can very well see here. The place is popular with rock climbers, of which one might encounter some, when visiting. A negative point are the many graffitis and signatures on this very special rock formation.
