What to do and see in Strontian, Scotland: The Best Things to do

July 9, 2021 Frederic Celentano

Strontian (/strɒnˈtiːən/; Scottish Gaelic: Sròn an t-Sìthein) is the main village in Sunart, an area in western Lochaber, Highland, Scotland, on the A861 road. Prior to 1975 it was part of Argyllshire. It lies on the north shore of Loch Sunart, close to the head of the loch. In the hills to the north of Strontian lead was mined in the 18th century and in these mines the mineral strontianite was discovered, from which the element strontium was first isolated.

Gill Wilson Studio/Gallery

This gallery is a hidden gem and well worth a visit! Beautiful artwork in a variety of mediums, some gorgeous landscape paintings particularly of the west coast. Also smaller works, beautifully painted stones and cards. You can look at Gill’s sketchbooks as she works in her gallery, she is an incredibly talented artist, and very warm and welcoming. You could link the gallery in with a walk through the woodland from strontian.

This is must do! Had my first Loch Swim with Laura - she is extremely professional and puts any first timers right at ease. Her trailer was a great set up with a private area to change which was really handy. Everything was provided quality wet suit, goggles, etc including stunning scenery below water and above! It was one of the best experiences I have ever had and amazing whether you are a first timer like me or a seasoned open water swimmer. Laura also provided a video of my experience which captured all the moments above and below water so you have the memories to keep on film. Highly recommend Laura and her company Swim Highlands.

Ariundle Oakwood National Nature Reserve

This is a fairly gentle walk through a beautiful ancient oak woodland, the path is clearly defined and signposted. One section is via a well maintained boardwalk. Stunning mountain scenery in the background. Will take the average walker about an hour and a half, taking time to enjoy the environment and views.
